Old old books! What finds! The King Arthur one was published in 1907 and only cost me $12.50!
What a morning! My internet hasn't been working for the past two days so I took it to get fixed this morning. Yay! My computer has life once again! Went to the Glebe Market again on Saturday and I bought two books - one of which is 98 years old! Was so impressed that I took a photo. It's about King Arthur and his knights and the front page has an incription written in 1908 and everything. Pretty wow. There were also a lot more vendors there this weekend than last time, and this jewelry designer named Jenny. here's her website: http://www.manikmercian.com
This lady is going to go far - it took every ounce of willpower not to spend money on her jewelry because I know that I have more than I will ever wear already... but she sells in Henri Bendel in NYC, and she just did the Victoria's Secret fashion show. Stunning work.
Other bonuses - I got my favorite Italian sandals fixed for free! The guy at Broadway Shopping Center just said that it wasn't that difficult so he wasn't going to charge me. Yay! I like nice people. I also saw a book that I want
in a bookstore called 'How to peel a peach: and 1001 other useful things for the kitchen". It tells you how to choose mangoes and what a free range chicken really is. Exciting!
Saturday arvo I went to a lecture at the Opera House... they do this cool Saturdays at Five thing where they'll talk about certain projects or styles of dance etc. and it's really about educating the public about dance. This one was about The Sleeping Beauty ballet that my mom and I are going to see in about a week. Some cool facts:
- This is one of the most costly ballets to produce because of the intricate sets and costumes, the huge cast and the fact that it is so long! It is the third time the Australian Ballet is putting it on - the first time, it opened up the Opera House!
- The Opera House stage is only 2/3 the size of most other theatres, plus the pit is too small so they actually have to rotate orchestra members each act to ensure that the musicians' eardrums are not damaged.
- Christian Frederickson did all the costumes, and died last month. He has now designed full sets for all three of Tchiakovsky's ballets: The Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty.
- All principal dancers are in each production, on rotation which is almost unheard of. One night, a dancer may play Aurora, and the next, a plum fairy!
- The moving trees alone cost about $20000. The total cost is over a million.
Then yesterday was absolutely gorgeous so I met Kenji for crepes and pancakes at Darling Harbour's Passionflower... then we went and took sticker pictures in true asian style, reminiscent of our high school days. Dropped him off at work and walked up to The Rocks for their Sunday market and sat around in the Botanic Gardens for a few hours reading my old books!! There are these little copper plates in the promenade leading up to the Opera House that show where the shorelines in 1788 and 1844 used to be. Fascinating.
On my way home, I signed up for a Museum of Sydney architecture walk which is held every wednesday and saturday. It's about two hours in length and they talk about aspects of certain buildings and styles etc. Oh yeah and I also stopped by Myer to replace my Elle Macpherson silk boxers that went missing from the laundry room. I was actually quite sad about that because they were so comfy. But yes, I went and used the last of my Myer gift card that I'd won off the residence and since they didn't have brown I got a nice greeny/sage/grey color. Plus they were 25% off this weekend!!! Score.
Not sure what I'm going to do with the rest of my day... perhaps the Powerhouse Museum, or the Art Gallery of NSW... I guess we'll see!
Ciao ciao
