Gallipoli ……. Perhaps no other word invokes such a strong wave of emotional feelings in the hearts and minds of every adult Australian and New Zealander as this one does at the very mention of it. It is where the Anzac (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) legend was born. In the pre-dawn hours, of 25th April, 1915, at approximately 4-4.30am, the first wave of Australian and New Zealand troops came ashore on the Gallipoli Peninsula at what was to later become known, as Anzac Cove. Instead of landing where they should have, about 1 kilometre further down the coastline at Brighton Beach, where the terrain was much more favourable for a beach landing, Anzac Cove was a complete and utter error of judgement by the Allied commanding officers. Our 2-month jaunt around Europe may have ended, but the story continues and the memories linger on ………. Over the coming weeks, we shall continue to tell the story of our travels - from cruising along the delightful Dalmatian Coast of Croatia in a vintage sailing motorboat; to the ruins of ancient Greece and island-hopping; our solemn visit to the battlefields of Gallipoli and on to the many delights that is Turkey. Long days of bus and train journeys and sometimes, even longer nights of overnight travel and lack of internet connections, were not conducive to publishing blog entries en route but, were often useful for being able to maintain a travel journal which the blogs spring from. We have seen and done some amazing things where we almost had to pinch ourselves to believe we ... read more

This forthcoming trip has been 3 years in the planning for various reasons and so, it still seems a bit surreal that our departure is now less than a couple of weeks away. What started out as a two-week trip to Turkey with friends, has grown into an epic almost “bigger than Ben Hur.” Once deciding that we would go to Turkey, I (Jan) thought that, seeing as Greece is “right next door”, why don’t we add that on too, and do some island-hopping? After all, we are going all that way – might as well make it really worthwhile and see as much as ... read more

I have been really bad at updating my travel blog. after leaving Byron Bay in mid december 2008 I came in to Sydney just before Christmas. While in Sydney I got to stay with friends and family and We had New Years in Sydney on Hunters Hill. I spent a bit of time in Sydney before taking of to Melbourne with a girls from London whom I met in Cairns while scuba diving. pretty cool. Well we decided to rent a mini van and drive along the Great Ocean Road. Recommending that. I doesn't take more than a few days and you can finish up your trip in the Grampians National park which is way better than the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney. Along the great ocean road you will see the 12 apostles which are ... read more
