ANZAC Museum
Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. A tribute to all who have served in the military here--World War I, II, Gulf War, Iraq, It's Monday here and time to do some sightseeing. Tried routing a trip by bus as there is supposedly a free bus that runs continuously in the downtown district, but gave up and opted to stick with the more familiar train routes. Walked to Central Station then got off at each stop on the way to Circle Quay to explore the sites. Hyde Park had some museums and memorials to Australian and New Zealand soldiers, and some lovely landscaping. At St. James Square we saw some old barrack buildings and St. Mary's Cathedral. We went inside the cathedral and Mike was chastised by the security guard for failing to remove his cap. Guess his days as an altar boy failed him today as a tourist. Headed on to the Circle Quay to check out the wharf area, the Opera House and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Some beautiful sights all around. It was a gorgeous day, sunny and warm, with no signs of the predicted "severe storm" until the dark clouds and wind started appearing about 3 p.m. Headed back to the home-away-from-home at that point--our feet were pretty worn out anyway. We got some lightning and thunder, and a few raindrops,
St. Mary's Cathedral
No ball caps allowed! but that was about it. Other areas of Sydney reported hail, so I guess we made out OK. Cooked our own dinner tonight--teriaki chicken, brown rice and a medley of assorted local vegetables. Oh, and Australian wine of course!
