Well here we go...my first travel blog. Instead of emailing, I'm thinking this is going to be a better way of communicating while I'm on the road. I leave Australia for a 5 month travel adventure on Nov 12 so rather than boring people with news of my moving from Sydney to Melbourne and my resignation from ACP (yes during the current global economic crisis - yikes!), I probably won't write in this blog until I am chewing on coca leaves high above the clouds somewhere in Peru. Until then... ... read more

Hi All, just a brief update of all we've been up to since the last entry - well actually a nice excuse to put up the much promised video of our apartment. Well the ink wasn't even dry on my last blog before I got a call from my boss giving me the old heave ho. As you can probably tell from my last entry I was not overly upset about this turn of events and actually it has worked out quite well for me. When we first arrived I was really hoping to get a job in Management Consultancy. When we registered with different recruitment agencies I made this wish expressly clear and they expressly ignored this. As is the way with these agencies they will charm you whilst trying to push you into the ... read more

We're in Australia now, real shame to leave NZ which we loved, but it's already warmer here and can't wait to head up the coast and enjoy the sunshine. We only had a few days on NZ's North Island but it was good fun, and a real change from the constant travelling we'd had before in the South. We arrived in Wellington off the ferry from Picton, and instantly realised we weren't going to be too sad to see the back of the campervan. We had to drive at least 15km out of the city to find a camping ground and when we did it was if we were staying just outside some kind of industrial estate. Still the next day we headed into town and Rachel met up with an old friend from London who ... read more

...so here we are and here i go; it's day four (i think) and at the moment it feels we're on a city break, albeit not a $20 sleezeyjet from stanstead. sydney weather has started off from where we left blighty, but a harbour bridge climb at 4am this am in rain, hail and 70km ph winds was definitely more dramatic because of it. as was the roosters v dragons game for the playoffs last night (roosters won), where the two of us trying to warm ourselves with a cold beer felt just like a winter friday night fixture at quins. the game was traded with a visit to meet newly born mahale the gorrilla at taronga zoo (which i secretly enjoyed!). our boutique budget hotel - the altamont - is fantastic and i'm sure will ... read more

Hi All, 4 weeks of living in Sydney was never going to fit into 1 entry. Our next big job after finding accomodation was to find a means of paying for it. Everything was considered, although the worst and wackiest were reserved for moments of moneyless panic. Who wouldn't consider a job which involved sitting around all day, doing absolutely nothing and getting well paid whilst at the same time helping people to develop their potential. A pretty valiant and noble profession I hear you say - see how easy it is to justify being a male nude model for an art class, the things you can justify when you're stuck for a few bob. It would have made a very interesting addition to my CV don't you think, certaintly someting 'different' to discuss in a ... read more

Hi All, You'd probably think by reading the last two blogs about getting accomodation and jobs that we haven't done anytrhing else, well you'd be very wrong. In between all of the hassle, stress and erm worry we've been able to put on a brave face and show up at a few local watering holes. We arrived on a Sunday morning and went on a short sight seeing tour of Sydney, We were really surprised that the city centre is so compact you look at something on the map and think it'll take 20 minutes to walk there. You head off and after 5 mins you arrive at something very like the thing you're not supposed to see for another 15 mins. It's really easy to get around. The people are really friendly and helpful, no ... read more

Howdy!

Well, I thought I'd wait to right a blog until something happened that could match the Mardi Gras in my last blog...but it doesn't really seem as though anything much has happened. That was until I actually thought about it!!! The next big thing after the Mardi Gras was the arrival of Nisha & I's friends Gemma & Sam, a couple we met in the Cook Islands, and part of 'The Bus Crew'! It was so good to have them here, and after a few days of rubbish weather they brought the sun with them from Adelaide, where it had been breaking records it was so hot!! The three of us went to meet them off the bus and had a happy reunion before trudging them up the hill to our house with their big ole ... read more

It's been a while since I last updated a blog, so it might be a long one! We hired a car in Port Douglas (a little bright yellow Hyundai Getz) and set off up the Captain Cook Highway to Daintree River, we took a detour to Daintree Village on the way and there wasn't much there at all, just an information centre, lots of river cruises and a few cafes! Back at Daintree River, we went on a croc tour on the Solar Whisper (the only ecological one or something like that) and saw a couple of crocs. We think we saw a little 6 inch baby, we saw a 6ft ish long teenager female and we saw a massive male (though he has half in, half out of the water) who weighs about 1000kg - ... read more

After a very uneventful (though longish) flight from Singapore, we're now in Sydney. Unsurprisingly enough, most of the in-flight entertainment revolved in some way around Heath Ledger, although we watched a very funny stand-up Australian comedian called Carl Barron. Some of his impressions of his father reminded me more than a little of my future father-in-law. Accommodation is good - very clean, newly renovated hostel, so it's nice not to have to shower in a stall with a three-inch gap in the hanging-off door. We're meeting up with Paul's friend Alyssa shortly for lunch, and tonight we're catching up with none other than Irish Andy, who we met in India, and is staying next door to us (although Anita is in Melbourne - hopefully we can see her in NZ though.)... read more
