Plane ride
Kara, Erin and I on the plane to Sydney So the morning I had dreded finally came. The day I leave Melbourne! *tear* I love this city so much...words can't express. I have only been here for a week adna half and I am already in love with it and planning my next visit.
After waking up late, Gavin and I rushed to pack the rest of our things and run downstairs to catch out bus to the airport. I gave Ashan and Vanessa my big box of tissues and said try not to cry too hard when I leave. I think i'm their favorite American so far! They asked me when I was planning on coming back, and as of right now, i'm not sure. I really really want to. Seeing as I am done with school come the end of Winter trimester, I may just save my money through the school year and come back to travel some more here. Through Cairnes, Alive Springs and Darwin. And I would love to spend my new years in Sudney, seeing as they spent like some 38 million bucks on fireworks alone this past year. Some crazy number....
After my sad goodbye, I gave my hugs to my Ibis
bustrip
See what I mean? sheesh... peeps and left for the bus. I was the last one on, of course. Being late is in my blood! Sadly, I didn't get to say goodbye to the rest of the cool people from Ibis, Tim, Katie (an uber cute girl who loves retro music), and Joseph ( the bartender who gave me and my 2 friends free drinks at the bar downstairs). Hopefully I will see them all again one day.
We reached the airport at about nine a.m. and our flight was at 10:30 so we had some time to kill. Erin and Kara had taught me a new card game called Flip the 10's; hhich is in close relation to the drinking game asshole. I love flip the 10's but I hate asshole. I think its because it has drinking involved in it or soemthing. I dont like many drinking games for some reason. We played a few games and we had a circle of 5 people playing at once to pass the time. I won some, I lost some.....but in the end, everyone knows I am the game guru. 😉
We soon boarded our plane and readied outselves for the hour and a

My room view half flight. Nothing compared to the flight coming to this country. *turns off all electronic devices*
When we landed I was excited to see the new city, but still missed the last one. We grabbed our luggage and made our way outside to our smaller than small shuttle bus. I counted up the seats and realized that the bus wasn't even big enough for our group, minus the luggage. We began to pile into the bus and hte driver was playing tetris with our luggage; except when he had 3 of the same color touching they didn't dissapear. So there we all were, crammed into this tiny shuttle bus with Justin and Claire standing up because there were no seats available for them. I would have switched with one of them, but we couldn't move ourselves around the luggage the way it was set up. Some listened to our iPods as we drove, Gavin on the other hand, played his didgeridoo the whole way there. I wasn't impressed with Sydney at all during the drive. We were in "the hood" it looked like dirty suburbs of Providence. No bueno! Kids were yellin out they wanted to go back to
city
Sydney Harbour Bridge:) Makes for a good run location. Melbourne. SOon enough, we rolled into the main section of town. Our professor had told us that our rooms were going to be smaller but we were getting something in return for that. The only thing I could think of was a nice view. Sadly, I was on the 2nd floor. What the hell, man! But when I entered the room, I was shocked. It was larger (Gavin and I have a bigger room than everyone else), and we had an amazing view out into the city. We could see Darling Harbour and the Sydney Tower (which I had done my paper on). The bridge over the harbour was flying tons of flags advertsing the upcoming festivals. I was so excited that we were actually there I needed to get out! Thankfully we had the day off after class which was only an hour or so. Erin, Meghan and I wandered out onto the streets of Sydney towards dusk. The air was much warmer than Melbourne. It was still chilly though...But I didn't care. We walked over the busy bridge looking out into the water wondering what there was to see. The first thing I noticed was how dirty it
city
Us @ the Opera House was....compared to Melbourne, Sydney is covered with trash. Gum stuck all over the sidewalk and trash on the road. I was shocked. A lot more people here use their cell phones (they call them Mobile phones) and a lot more smoke compared to Melbourne. You didn't see much of that there. Oh...and they drive like Rhode Islanders here. Because they consider this country so much more safe, there are never any police officers out there to monitor traffic. I'm lucky I havn't been run over yet!! This city is much more "americanized" it reminded me of NYC.
We walked and walked and walked. We ended up lost but we thought we were heading in the right direction. We wanted to go to the rocks. Which is a historical part of Sydney that was built by criminals. There are also rumors of hauntings there too. But it makes great location for pubs!! We finally found our way and then through the trees I spotted something. With the Sydney Harbour Bridge to our left (which is massive), I saw the one thing I've been waiting to see. The Sydney Opera House. We quickly changed direction and walked down to a swank
city
Opera @ night little court yard with La Luna Park to the left, past the bridge and the Opera House was right in front of us over the water. It was beautiful. This is the kind of thing you only see on TV or in pictures...And I was looking at it first hand. It's so big and sleek. You sould see the texture of the walls from where we were standing. We all sat there and just stared at it until the sun set. I couldn't wait until we took our tour through it later in the week.
Thank god for accidently getting lost!
After that, we head back towards the hotel where I got my first Kabob. The official backpackers treat. It wasn't all that bad, and it cost me only 6 bucks for one. I need to find cheaper ways to feed myself though...Money is getting tight!!!
