Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

I got to Coogee beach early to get most of the sun i had left, and it was the best beach I had been to in Sydney. I had the classic Aussie fish - barramundi for lunch then had a walk up the hill, it was very scenic and a great place to ponder. When I got back I had to pack as it was my last day in Sydney, then we had dinner in a fairly posh restaurant between the harbour bridge and opera house. It was a nice way to end our time here. Australia is great. We’ve been having a ball since we arrived. It’s really funny because we feel like we’re just on holiday for a couple of weeks, not scummy travelers. It has been amazing having Stu's friend Scott’s apartment to ourselves while he’s off doing his traveler thing too in South America - thanks a lot mate! I think we have been getting into the creature comforts a bit much though. We almost feel like we live here now. American hostels might be a bit of a shock after all this comparative luxury. (Stu’s been to Australia before but I didn&r [View Full Entry]

Sunset at Sydney Harbour...
Flamin' Galars!
Cheers Mate!

Hello! Well, I finally have a home. Justine, Nick and I (two other Canadian exchange students) are living together in an apartment minutes from the beach in a suburb of Sydney called Coogee. The address is: 80 Bream Street Apt.5 Coogee, New South Whales, Australia, 2034 It really is the perfect spot! The beach is literally at the end of the street, it's a half hour walk to campus or 15 min bus ride, the bus stop is just down the road, and bars, groceries, convenience stores etc, are all around us. It came partially furnished, complete with a huge [View Full Entry]

"Hi my name's Simon, i'm calling on behalf of Westpac Bank can I speak to ya'll" My first week in a large sectioned off office has come to a swift and very repetative end. Lets just say it's not exactly the most interesting or exciting of jobs but I do get to speak to some very weird and wondeful people down the blower. The only thing that is keeping me sane there are the couple of lads I've met there, both of whom are english... It's great to be working in Sydney in and around Ozzie people??!?! One guy (Tom) who [View Full Entry]

As has been the case lately, the lack of planning has stung particularly hard whenever needed the most. Simple things like checking into hostels have been of no real problem or importance due to the abundance of housing opportunities within any given town. Trains, busses and cars however, we’ve been definitely been paying a premium because we’ve not booked passage more than 2 hours prior to departure. A visa, a completely overlooked aspect of the trip until this point would become the newest thorn in my side. The girl at the Qantas check in counter was kind enough to offer us [View Full Entry]

Waiting for something to happen

On the 26th of January the Aussies proudly celebrated 'Australia Day'..I of course was scheduled to work that night. Our small beach town of Coogee was swamped with people, street performers, barbecues and concerts. Me and Simon took a stroll to the beach front and took part in the feel good atmosphere, relaxing on the grass with our hot dogs in hand we became curious about the gathering group of people along a barrier...as we stood with the people I asked someone what was happening when a man ran past with a high tech looking torch...apparently it was the Commonwealth Games [View Full Entry]

Australia Day at Darling Harbour
Thats musical talent!
Metro Bar

I have a hangover!!!! ...Last night was awesome!!! Went to see the Magic Numbers at a place in the city called the Metro. We had the tickets booked for a good while and we were bullying the album so we knew the songs etc. We got to the Metro and ordered a beer (obviously) only to find it was $5 for a small can of Toohey's, well that's expensive. We had the first round and then Matt, Chris and myself felt we needed a bit more intoxication in order to get the full benefit and enjoyment of the gig so we [View Full Entry]

Lovely Gordan's Bay
The boat racks at Gordan's Bay

There has been a lack of activity within the beach-house apartment of recent days mainly due to the (and it pains me to say it!) BAD weather!!!! I can almost hear the laughter echoing from the otherside of the world as you read that. But it's true the weather has been a shocker for a week or so raining everday. So when living by the beach there really isn't a lot to do in such weather. Colin and I visited the Museum of Sydney to educate ourselves further to the history of Sydney, namely an exhibition called a 'Biography of Bondi'. [View Full Entry]

The recent activity schedule has been 'dampened' somewhat by the poor weather. Its been overcast for a good week which isnt a good climate for a beach town..leaving not much to do with only 2 shifts during the week! On the Monday me and Colin went to Oxford street, the gay district of Sydney, to browse the thrift stores and cool clothes shops. Braving the crap weather in our shorts and thongs I encountered the famous 'Gay Tramp' who hassles me every time Ive been to Oxford Street, "Oh Darling.. spare some change..oh I do love you..."....a surreal experience witnessing a [View Full Entry]
