Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hi everyone, Well I got back to bangkok airport with slighty less hassle than on the way (although the Thai driver singing Delta Goodrem was a little alarming!!!!). Could've done with another day there really but never mind!! Arrived in Sydney this morning to beautiful blue skies!!! My hostel is literally across the road from the beach where I spent a couple of hours this afternoon and i'm already feeling the burn!!! Unfortunatly I cant get the USB hub on this computer so I will be going to an internet cafe up the road later this week to put some photos [View Full Entry]

My god have I arrived!! What an experience so far. I got in on Saturday night after a really long flight. Couldn't sleep on the plane as I was wedged in between two large blokes - Quantas don't have great leg room. However, you know me, I didn't want to go to bed and as soon as I arrived in the hostel I went and got some booze and joined the other girls in my dorm for a few. Later on I went out to the local boozer - Coogee Bay Hotel (cbh). So I arrived at 9pm and didn't get [View Full Entry]

We have arrived in Oz, after a pretty uneventful flight, but didn't get any sleep, nothing new there. Going through customs on entry was fun, lots of questions and searches going on. One security guy approached me, and started asking where I got my swollen red eye, he seemed to assume that i had been hit, so i went along with that, as I didn't want them to turn me away thinking i had some weird infection. Arrived at danny and kates place, at a good 8 in the morning, don't think danny actually believed we were there, and he seemed [View Full Entry]

Hi guys, We've made it in one piece! Arrived in the early hours of Thursday morning (well actually about 8am but that's early hours when u aren't used to dragging ya self out of bed until bout midday on a regularl basis) and the first thing I did was put my hoodie on! It's been lovely during the days, pretty much like home on a balmy summer's day but at night it drops. Who said Australia is a hot a country? We've been staying at Mark's friends, Danny and Katie's bedsit in Coogee, half hr bus journey to city centre, for the first [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone.....tomorrow is a big day for me.....i'm-a-coming home!!! I'm beyond excited and it really doesn't seem real to me and it's a bit strange right now to be sitting in Bangkok again and than tomorrow Korea!! Going back in time a little bit. It's also funny that my flight home is 12 hours from Korea to Toronto and there's a 12 hour time difference as well so literally i'll arrive at the exact time I left!! I got to Bangkok at 3am this morning....had a nap and i've missed my fresh pineapple so i'm going to have a couple of [View Full Entry]

G'day mates! Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Sydney » Coogee Beach
Greetings from down under!! Australia...more specifically Sydney (That's the only place i've been..hahah) is everything that people say it is. The rumours are true!! I'm having SUCH a good time here and especially with my friend Amanda who has been the best host ever! She's probably seen everything around 10 times but doesn't mind seeing it once more for me. We've been having amazing weather as well and for just turning Spring here it's awfully hot out! We've done the usual touristy things like going to the harbour and walking around the very very clean city and doing waaayy tooooo mu [View Full Entry]

So, I think you left me in Cairns - wandering the night markets as I recall. Well, I didn't come back burdoned with didgeridoos and boomerangs but I did have a really good curry, yum!! Eating and drinking have been major past-times whilst here in Australia (and in New Zealand too) so don't be surprised if there is a bit more of me when I get home. Anyway so the bus trip to Airlie Beach was a 10 hour marathon. The bus itself was quite comfortable but the scenery was boring - hundreds of fields of sugar cane interspersed with the [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Sorry it's been so long since I've updated this thing, now that I'm living in Sydney and going to Uni here things have settled down quite a bit compared to all the adventures I was having while travelling the East Coast. Aussie life is wonderful! I'm in week 8 of 14 at Uni (as the Aussies refer to university, not school, because here, school refers to highschool). Just finished a week full of midterms and assignments. It really is unfortunate that uni work has to get in the way of my time here! The weather is starting to [View Full Entry]

Not much to say really. We took a quick walk along the beach from Cogee to Bondi and took some pictures. Met a few friends along the way had a nice picnic and watched some guy training kite boarding on land with a skate board. Quite amusing. I didn't bother taking any pictures of Bondi. I'llsave that until summer when the circus starts. Brazilian waxing galore, etc. Ugh! [View Full Entry]
