Well what a nice fuck up to start the trip - the dickhead at Civic station wasn’t changing the signs so I missed the train to Sydney I was going to be catching. Great. Then when I got to Broadmeadow I find out there is track work somewhere on the Central Coast and changed timetables, including buses between some of the stations. Now why the fuck can’t they out this into the database running the website?! So despite getting dropped off at Civic at 12:20, at 16:00 I was only just past Woy Woy and making it on time not too good at all.
It would be good to have some Internet access on the train while you are fart arsing around waiting for the stupid train to crawl along. After the earlier fuck ups I was lucky that the timing with the train from Central to the airport was pretty spot on. Got off then made it to Emirates check in with 10 minutes to spare. I walked around looking at possible gifts at the shops but they were all “Made in China” crap so I decided to skip them all and got something to eat.
As I was getting on I found out the plane was half full of an English rugby league tour, all young blokes around 16 with a few managers and others to look after them. Luckily none were sitting near me. As expected, the flight was a “no sleep” zone for me which didn’t make it much fun. Watched a pretty good movie called “Thank You For Smoking”, black comedy about a lobbyist for big tobacco. I tried watching “The Da Vinci Code” but really can't remember if I managed to make it all the way. Certainly wasn’t spectacular. Hope the book was better than the movie or a whole lot of people are very easily entertained.
After however many painful hours to Bangkok they tell us we can go to the Emirates lounge in the airport while we are waiting for the plane to be refueled, cleaned, etc. except after walking around trying to find the bloody thing it is business class only. Dickheads. So I ended up walking numerous laps of the duty free area, trying to get the legs feeling OK again. At least the next part of the flight I was going to sit at the exit doors so I had more room to spread out. Bangkok airport is all shiny and new and humid. The air con comes out these fin-shaped things about head height with lots of small holes in the metal. I just parked myself against one of these and stayed there until nearly everyone had gone through the boarding gate. I was feeling a bit tired by now, it was something like 3am back home I think. I spent most of the Bangkok - Dubai leg playing games, lots of checkers and reversi. The movies weren’t much chop and I’d seen the docos that I was interested in.
