17 - 19 February 2011 The last two nights with the parents were spent at Talbingo and Jounama Creek. We set up camp next to the creek which was the highest it had been in a decade. It was a proper camp experience with a hotpot on the fire for dinner and Alex made his damper. The drive up to Talbingo was absolutely stunning. We drove the Alpine Way and went through the highest town in Australia, Cabramurra. We've seen so many towns which obviously boomed in their heyday but are since pretty much deserted. Driving through Selwyn from the other side was interesting and it's strange to see these places dry instead of covered in snow. We stopped at Khancoban for lunch and at a couple of lookouts. We went to the Yarrangobilly Caves one ... read more

15 - 16 February 2011 After leaving Parma, we ventured down south with mum and dad. We spent one night at Congo in the Eurobodalla National Park which was absolutely beautiful camping right next to the beach and lagoon. Dad didn't know he was coming camping with us after Parma so mum had secretly packed all their bags and camp gear. Following Congo, we headed to the southern part of Kosciuszko NP where we camped at Sawpit Creek and did the Kosciuszko Lookout walk. Pity the weather was so bad as we couldn't actually see Kosciuszko from the lookout! At least we saw the plaque!! Went for some short drives - it's so scenic and good to see outside of the winter time. The facilities at Sawpit Creek were really good and there were loads of ... read more

By a stroke of great luck and generosity on the part of Hannah, I had the offer of a lift to the Snowy Mountains, a place I'd planned to go with the car but thought I'd have to ditch now that I was chained to public transport. We booked into a hostel at Thredbo and covered the 550km journey in a day. Switzerland, the Snowies are not. For most of the approach from the east, they weren't really visible, but then we arrived at Jindabyne, a pleasant town set on a large lake, and we were now surrounded by wooded hills - a gentle rather than rugged type of scenery. Thredbo is principally a ski resort, but we were there out of season so there was no snow to be seen (Snowies without the snow... hmm). ... read more

Kosciuszko National Park Trip 5th - 9th January, 2010 Melbourne to Cathedral Range State Park This was going to be a great little road trip to see some parts of Australia that neither Rupesh or I had visited before. We drove along the Black Spur to Marysville. The amount of regrowth since the bushfires of Black Saturday almost 12 months earlier was incredible. It is still a very pretty area despite the devastation. But it wasn't the town I recognised visiting a few years earlier when going on a day trip up to Lake Mountain. Lots of temporary housing and beginnings of re-building. A new supermarket just recently opened. We drove in to the Cathedral Range State Park where bushfire damage signs warned of falling tree limbs. We stayed well clear of the trees and camped ... read more

DAY 393 Another perfect Australian morning, the bed is cosy, the sun is up although the morning is still nice and cool we are shaded by the trees. Andy sleeps in longer this morning but I get up and make a cup of tea. Looking out into the long grass and beyond I can see lots of kangaroos and if you look hard into the grass you can see more of them if only just their little dark ears flicking around in the grass. Much further out I can see several Emu’s walking across the plain, out onto the dam, people are bobbing about in their boats fishing, maybe they are still there from last night, who knows? While others are out on their jet ski’s, in speedboats while some are being pulled along on skis. ... read more

DAY 392 It was a very cold night, I woke up with cold feet at one stage and wished that I could easily get my hands on a pair of socks, but that meant getting out of bed and getting even colder, that is the price we pay for being up in the mountains on Kosciuszko National Park, we could not expect it to be any different even at this time of year. I think Andy was out of bed first, he usually is, however a little later than normal but who can blame him, the bed is warm and cosy. We both have our fleeces on for a while to keep the morning chill out. Out on the grassy areas ahead of us we see the kangaroos again, they are all there in abundance some ... read more

DAY 391 A 7.00 start again for me this morning, Andy is already up and tapping away at the Internet, my tea is handed to me so I enjoy a little while longer in bed drinking it. Once I am up we have breakfast but heading into the camp kitchen we see that again there are a lot of crockery and cutlery lying about, after breakfast we make haste in getting packed up. While we leave the base of the tent to dry in the warmth of the sun we head off for a shower, I hear Andy talking to someone in the kitchen, it is the lady from last night, she said “oh, no one has come to do the washing up!” I heard Andy respond, “you have to do the washing up yourself, the ... read more

The cool southerly change had well and truly arrived when we left Merimbula, with a light drizzle falling. We re-fuelled and were pleased to see that the cost of diesel is now similar to petrol (actually cheaper in Orbost), whereas we have often paid up to 30 cents per litre more for diesel on our trip. We stopped to have a look and taste at the Bega Cheese Factory, then continued on the Snowy Mountains Hwy (with more cheese in hand) towards Cooma. On the way, we stopped for lunch at Nimmitabel. However, it was 7°C, misty and drizzling, so we ended up eating in the car (cheese sandwiches), although we had a lovely view of the mist over the nearby lake. We passed through Cooma and headed for Jindabyne, where we stopped at the Visitor ... read more
