Pour ... read more

A great nights sleep fom everyone which was a really good start to the trip as we were expecting to suffer form jet lag for a few days (although the fact that I have been blogging since 05.30 suggests it is not completely gone away!) Tom and Chloe headed off to school and we had a very relaxing morning at Chez Colfers before Michele, Alex, Iz and Rochelle headed off for a run to explore the local area and I went off to pick up our hire car. After a quick spot of lunch the Colemans headed off to the Blue Mountains which lie around 2 hours west of Sydney. We subsequently found out they are "blue" because of the blue tint of the Eucalyptus leaves which are in abundance in the area. After an easy ... read more

Cliff-Hanging in Katoomba Before leaving England I had been pretty well determined to take part in every kind of extreme sport available while I was away. Just ‘cause. I suppose it tied in with the whole ‘finding yourself’ aspect of travelling. So when I saw abseiling advertised in the YHA lobby, I signed myself right up. The hostel itself was a grand old building, spacious and decked out with original features – especially in the ‘ballroom’ – wooden floors, banisters, windows, the lot. The fact that it was a little too big for its occupants, and the fact that it was not peak season actually added to the charm and made it feel oddly homey. The kitchen even had condiments left by people moving on someplace else. I love condiments. Almost everything in Katoomba is within ... read more

Tuesday 11th February, 2014. Prince Henry Cliff Walk, Katoomba, Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia After breakfast we headed for Central to catch the train to Katoomba. We purchased a 7 day MyTrain ticket which allows you unlimited travel on the buses, ferries and trains in the Sydney area. This covers an area about the size of the South East of England so we can go a long way on it - and we intended to get our $68 worth too! The train left on time and took 2 hours to get there. We had both been here before in 2008 but this time we were staying at the YHA instead of a backpackers. We found the YH no problem. Walking down the main street we both suddenly felt that we were on holiday. Katoomba really is a ... read more

Góry Błękitne, czyli to, co tygryski lubią najbardziej :) zapewniły nam wspaniały początek tygodnia. Zaledwie dwie godziny drogi pociągiem i nagle z zatłoczonego Dworca Centralnego przenosimy się do Katoomby - turystycznego miasteczka w sercu niemal tropikalnej puszczy porosłej eukaliptusami.

This was an organised trip so 8.15 saw us standing outside the hotel waiting for our pickup in a minibus. We booked with Oz Trails as their schedule missed out the zoo which we weren't fussed about. Real mixed bag on the trip - we had Fins, Indonesians, Irish, Japanese, Americans as well as us Brits. First stop was a bit random (by the parramatta river where the rowing took place at the Sydney Olympics) and appeared to be for the sole reason of making sure you had already paid for your trip. From there we carried on up to the mountains and to the Wentworth Falls lookout. We were told this trip didn't include much walking which was true. What they didn't say was the the bit of walking there was involved going up and ... read more

Woke up a tiny bit hungover today, went out last night with the hostel people who are so friendly. But wanted to head to the blue mountains so got up showered and ate then left with a few girls from my room at the blue parrot they are German, Chilean, and Czech. We took the train to Katoomba the little town where the mountains are and it took 2 hours. We sat in the quiet carriage but I don't think anyone noticed so they were chatting the whole way but I was soo embarrassed as I know how seriously they take it here because I have already been told off twice in the quiet zone! People didn't look very impressed with us. We walked down to the mountains and took the steep mine train down to ... read more

We caught the airport train out to the car pick up point for a mere fraction of the price it cost to get to the airport ($4.50 as opposed to $15 and only five minutes down the line!). A foreign lady checked the car with us with me playing lawyer and photographing every nook and crannie to absolve us of liability should any arguments occur down the line. After insisting she find it, the lady produced us our promised guide which provided details of all the free camp-sites and rest stops. We decided to pick up the car 3 days earlier than planned as we managed to see everything we wanted to in Sydney in our very long and productive day. I had spotted a lot of tours going to the Blue Mountains and several people ... read more

After a breakfast of cornflakes and bananas for me and weatabix and honey for Andrew, we did our very own tour of the Blue Mountains. First stop was was the Katoomba Cascades and Coles where we decided after a rather freezing night that we needed to purchase more bedding. We bought some rather warm faux fur throws to pad out the sleeping bags and take the edge off the chill. The Katoomba Cascades walk was rather steep so we admired the falls from afar before I took the car for my first drive since the day I passed my test. We drove to the Leura Cascades which were far more impressive and we took a picnic for the nice walk to the bottom of the cascades. We stopped again at the Wentworth Falls before I had ... read more

It's has been about a month since I completed my Instructor training here in Sydney, and I have been loving every minute of it. My friends and I had some time off to hang out and take a trip to the Blue Mountians and so all the touristy things we have been wanting to do. I have found out that I am also really enjoying teaching. I've taught everything from Open Water, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Navigation, Search and Recovery, and a few other specialties. I really enjoy planning out each of my courses to fit to a layout that I like, and running the classes how I see fit. It is strange, however, when I teach people who are significantly older then I am. It's like telling my dad what to do, and correcting him when ... read more
