Jindabyne Travel Blogs

Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hello! Wow how time flies! Apparently it's 3 months since I last wrote. Where does the time go??? Its a god job I'm not actually 'traveling' as such, because I'd have given up on trying to keep you updated long ago. There's not too much to tell..... ish! I spent the last couple of months in a tiny town called Jindabyne (yes the same as the movie, which happens to be very good if you come across it) which is located in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, about 6hours South of Sydney. Jindabyne is an Australian ski resort (yes [View Full Entry]

There is a lovely road which passes through the Alpine and Snowy River National Parks as it crosses from Buchan in Victoria to Jindabyne in New South Wales. The road is remote; more than half of its 180 km length is dirt track and it climbs steadily to peak at 1343 metres at the 150 km mark. Just a few 4WD vehicles pass along this way, plus the occasional lunatic cyclist. Within the protected park areas dense bush runs down to the roadside and extends for miles around; outside the park territory, rolling farmland stretches away for ever. There are no [View Full Entry]

After the Phillip Island tour our bus driver dropped me off at a train station in the city, where I was by myself, on a Saturday night at midnight so I could head an hour outside the city to meet up with some Young Lifers that were going to take me to camp the next morning...that I had never met and had no idea what they looked like, haha. At 1am I made it there and found my ride...I was so proud of myself for figuring out the train system by myself and not being too scared in the city with [View Full Entry]

I'm aware that it's only been about 24 hours since my last entry, but this one couldn't wait. It's been an interesting day for me in the heart of the Snowies. By way of prelude to this blog, I might make mention that Banjo Patterson's quintessential bush ballad, "The Man From Snowy River" manages to capture so vividly the ruggedness of both the Snowy Mountains and the Australian Stockman alike. I had hoped that on my trip to this treasured part of Australia's natural and historical heritage I would somehow mirror the feats of the great legend himself, hurtling down the [View Full Entry]

Never again

I woke up in a bad mood because one of the guys came in to the room while i was sleeping, turned on the light for ages and didnt apologise! Then he started snoring..grr...not as bad as Skinny does though. I had to get up at 5:45am. We got on the bus at 6:45, along with people from Switzerland, Finland, Italy, Germany, and a couple other English. By this time we had said goodbye to Tom and Wendy had already left. We stopped up the road to sign in and there was a crazy homeless man stealing coffee and cursing at [View Full Entry]

Matkattiin Sydneysta 7 jalkeen aamulla turistibussin tapaisella pienella autolla, jossa oli 17 henkea kyydissa Canberraan. Suurimman tarkastelun kohteena oli paikallinen parlamenttitalo. Eipa siita enempaa. Kuvat kertovat ehka sitten enemman.

Is that where the Yogasutra takes place?
We noticed that you could wake up early to participate in the "Yoga-sutra" activities up at Ontos BUT we were all too scared to take a peek for fear of what we might see! lol
Frigging freezing night. Took all night to get cozy. We go to snow now. I can't believe that I went to bed last night with frozen buttocks! lol Yes, it was super cold out last night! I woke up with a sore throat this morning but it only lasted about 1/2 hour. Guess I was breathing through my mouth last night or something. Or fear among fears...I'm getting sick?!? We spent a lot of today driving on windy roads because we're driving through the Snow Mountains. So we spend a lot of time playing games like celebrity head and naming movies [View Full Entry]
