Huskisson: one wedding ring lost in the sand
We ventured out of the round house on the Shoalhaven River for a bit of an explore. Suzy, Nick, Erin, James and Sunny piled into the car and drove south to Huskisson, a cute little town on the edge of Jervis Bay, NSW. The weather looked a bit dodgy - the rain started on the way there, so we headed straight to the Husky pub for some lunch. There's always huge servings at the Husky pub, and we managed to dodge most of the fried food, except the chips which seem to come with everything. But sitting outside, and the wind coming at us with spits of rain every now and again, the fried food got more appealing.. as it does in the cold.
We introduced our UK friends the Pughs to chicken salt, which had to be done, and aside from not really getting the concept of why it was so important on hot chips, I think they liked it. The need to call chips "hot chips" as we do Down Under was a longer conversation.
The view from the pub is amazing - right out over Jervis
Bay. Why they put the bin shelter between the tables and the view I'll never know. But you do see that kind of thing a LOT. Why. After lunch we went for a wander. Not far - just down to the little strip of beach next to the end of the ocean water swimming pool on the foreshore. We took off our shoes, went for a run around, Sunny ate some sand, and Suzy lost her wedding ring.
I'm not sure why she took it off. I think it was something to do with using the sand to clean it. The sand at this bit of beach, and Hyam's just around the way, is supposed to be some of the finest and whitest going. Maybe someone mentioned that. Anyway, off it came and, as probably only Suzy Pugh could do, she lost it. Next thing you know everyone's down on all fours looking for it, fingering gingerly through the sand in the area around where she was shining a moment before. I scooped Sunny up and away from the action at this point as he seemed to be helping by throwing sand around the pre-sifted area and threatening to
become a part of the divorce proceedings if the ring was never found.
Happy to say though, it was found, and celebrate we all did. I was amazed, to tell you the truth - I thought that ring was a gonner. Thank god for that, or it may have been a very different Aussie holiday for the Pughs. And off we set... looking for some warmer weather and to impulse-buy some beachy hoodies via a few surf shops along the main drag of Huskisson, decided on some massive cold blobs of ice cream instead, and then back home to the round house for late afternoon sunsets over the evergreen shadowing south coast hills. Aah, I love holidays.
