Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

By this stage we were all getting fed up with Australia and decided to gently make our way down the final part of the New South Wales coast to Sydney. Most of our days were spent the same way: we would drive to a town or beach on the map, become disapointed and move on in the hope of finding somewhere better. We visited Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour and Newcastle with various bays along the way but none of which took our fancy. We spent most of our nights in free rest areas or truck stops, enjoying our home cooking and [View Full Entry]

Captain Cook

My inter-continental journey is now more than halfway complete (yes, I am also surprised I have lasted this long) and to celebrate this I have recently been ‘on the road’ once again. But first, since it has been the longest break between updates lets have a browse over my actions the past couple of months… I have been staying in a room known only as the ‘dungeon’, which has no power points, all brick walls and a metal roof. However I have fooled myself into thinking I’m staying in a trendy studio apartment. I have continued to catch up with old [View Full Entry]

We recently visited the Australian Reptile Park on the New South Wales Central Coast, not the easiest of places to get to by public transport but we noticed several coaches in the car park so if you do not have your own transport touring companies would be a good place to start. The park is as much as anything an educational venue for families which is rather valuable because many of the visitors live in areas that contain some of the most dangerous snakes and spiders in the world. The park also has many marsupials and birds, some of them are [View Full Entry]

Many of you will be wondering if I have made it to Australia. Well if that person is you then it’s your lucky day - I have been here for the past 3 weeks and for the first time this year I have settled down (well sort of)…. BUT FIRST! My last 3 days in Thailand turned out to be of superior quality forcing me to dedicate one last paragraph to the country full of rice and noodle delights. My itinerary for the 18th April was born three years ago when I was watching a documentary on Discovery about Monks that [View Full Entry]

Tonight we celebrated an early Mother's Day. My son Michael flew down from Queensland and Sarah drove up from Camden. We went the Bateau Bay Leagues Club for dinner. What a lovely evening, and Sarah surprised me with a gift of pj's, chocs and a dvd. Her boyfriend, Steve joined us for dinner which was lovely. While we were waiting for dinner a clown came along and made me a lovely flower balloon for Mother's Day. Fabulous. Meagan and Michael won some chocolates on the machine. We are now at home. Steve and Michael are watching the footy - ummm Australia [View Full Entry]

On Friday I went out to lunch with Rosie, mum and Sheelagh at the Gosford Sailing Club. Unfortunately, I did not take the camera so I have no pictures. We had a lovely lunch though, and it was great to catch up with Rosie who was visiting from Old Bar. In the evening Steve, Meagan, Sarah and her Steve and I went out to dinner in Toukley with Mick, Jan and Winnie (the people that Sarah lives with in Camden). We had a very enjoyable evening at the Indian Restaurant. On Saturday morning we hitched up the caravan and drove to [View Full Entry]

Dinner on Saturday

We've done about 450 km up the coast so far, stopping off at Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and Port Macquarie along the way. The heavy downpours of rain over the past few days have surprised us, but it's autumn here so I suppose it's not going to be so mad hot and sunny... We've encountered a few examples of Aussie wildlife on our way, one particular introduction being quite unexpected and a bit of a lesson on being aware of what might be lurking in the dark! We were the only camper van on the site at Lake Macquarie, and since [View Full Entry]

I decided to show the Australians how to really surf...NO WETSUIT!
Our trip has begun! I'll keep this short because I'll be updating more often now. I'm currently at my good friend Mark Dunston's house in the Central Coast...about two hours north of downtown Sydney. We spent Wednesday night at Max (one of my Harbord roomates) holiday house. It is basically a time share, so we went up for the night. It is on this tiny island, so we had to take a ferry to get there. We missed it by an hour, not even close and we faced with paying for an eighty dollar water taxi...or not going. Thankfully, we gave [View Full Entry]
