Today I am writing my blog from Byron Bay. But let me first write about the last couple of days in Coffs Harbour. So I spent the last 3 days in Coffs Harbour at some park right next to the beach. While driving up to Coffs Harbour the first thing I started seeing on signs was “The Big Banana” which in the wrong context is probably not a place I would normally go to, still I decided to take the turn and low and behold there was a huge banana just sitting in front of some cafe. I parked in the parking area to make some photos of this huge banana. While walking around it I noticed a little gift shop where they have everything banana related, from T-Shirts to Key Rings and even Banana Butter ... read more

Saturday the 23rd of Januari we arrived at Byron bay around 1 in the afternoon. We checked in into our hostel, and I got a room with 3 other people from surfcamp: Roos, Stephanie and Dez. Actually I met Roos and Stephanie already in the first hostel back in Sydney, so it was pretty nice to be in the same room as them. We wanted to go surfing after we checked in but they told us not go out as the waves were to big for beginners. But as we just came of the 14 hour bus ride me and dez wanted to do something, so we rented mountainbikes and explored the area of Byron bay. The lady at the reception told us about an good bike tour, along a beautiful lake and some nice beaches ... read more

After spending a few days in Bryon Bay Stephanie and Roos decided to rent a car on the 26th of January and explore some more of the places close to Byron bay. She asked me and Dez (Dezsoe) to come along. So the 4 of us went on a little road trip, before we went we asked around and looked on the internet what we could do/see. Some people told us about the minyon falls and some very nice beaches close to Byron bay. Also there was a little town called nimbin close by, that was supposed to be a hippy town. So we started driving to Minyon falls, as Stephanie rented the car she was the only one allowed to drive. In the beginning it was a little strange, as she had to drive on ... read more

The Greyhound bus was punctual, as ever, and we left the lovely Port Macquarie on time. The bus had a trainee driver on board too, so that he could learn the route. It was his fourth attempt at doing so! He was quite chatty which made up for the 'real' driver who was quite grumpy, though I guess it was the middle of the night and he was doing all the work so he might be forgiven. Our route took us through Kempsey, Macksville, Nambucca Heads, Urunga, Coffs Harbour, Woolgoolga, Woodburn, Ballina and into Byron Bay. The journey was mainly done in the dark so I couldn't see much of the countryside but there were lots of roadworks taking place slowing things down just a bit in places. I'd noticed a lot of new roads being ... read more

Byron Bay is the most Easterly point in Australia. Did a really nice hike today to the point (about 3 hours return). The view was great and definitely worth the sunburn. I've already bought 4 bottles of sunscreen since I've been here. The town itself is a really small hippie town known for it's surfing. The waves are good for beginners because they are small, break pretty deep and roll a long way into shore. I was going to rent a surfboard but was too tired and had enough sun for the day after the hike. It's very different from Surfers Paradise - a lot of people here don't wear shoes, there are lots of people with dreadlocks, wearing really loose, bright hippie clothes. Even the backpackers that hang out here have a very chill mindset ... read more

So Alcohol doesn't get you through the night bus. Instead of getting on and drifting off to sleep, I got on slept a bit woke up and gradually got more sober and tired with intervals of sleep. By the time we arrived in Byron I felt awful. The cold that had been just on the verge of being a problem all down the east coast decided it was now a problem. I had a sore throat, could barely talk and couldn't get warm. Of course hostels being hostels, don't let you check in until 2pm. I put my bag in storage and headed into town, aiming to find food for the next few days, something to hopefully boost the immune system and make me feel better. I got back at 2 and got my bag into ... read more

26th of January-So this morning was a little awkward but not as bad as I thought it would be. Sam and Brendon were there bright and early to ride and when we were having breakfast I saw that they were doing Duke's feet and were about to put him back in the paddock. I said to Malou that I really wanted to go and say goodbye to him....I just felt that I maybe wasn't allowed but she pushed me to go and do it and I'm glad she did :) I gave him a pat and a kiss on his face and very nearly burst into tears :( :( Brendon gave me a nice smile and Sam sheepishly said 'oh are you going now? Thank you for all your help' so I did the right thing ... read more
