Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Greg's mom sent us with Banana chocolate chip walnut muffins. They weren't taken away at Quarantine at the airport, so we shared them and enjoyed them on the bus trip from Sydney to Goulburn...yum!
Well, we've been settled for a couple of days in Goulburn, just north of Canberra. We're being hosted by a typical Aussie batchelor, who has made us very welcome in his home. The weather here is WAY colder than we expected, with high winds and no heat in any of the buildings we are in during the days (a sheep kennel/exhibition grounds, I think). So, we're wearing most of what we've packed in as many layers that we can wear without being too cramped. Our flight into Sydney was long, but better than we both expected - we each watched a [View Full Entry]

Hi All, We have just returned to River Heads after a week of fishing at Boondooma Dam. Johns uncle from Gympie was there with another couple and we spent a very enjoyable week with them. We had a beautiful campfire every night and attempted to catch fish during the day. I caught my very first Australian Bass which I was very excited about until John threw it back without me even getting a picture. He then went on to catch another couple, both of which we got photos of (although they weren't as big as mine). The camper worked well and [View Full Entry]

One of the places that I wished to visit while here on my Rotary scholarship was a trip up to Canberra. When I met Louisa Dow, a Rotary Peace Fellow who's going to Duke in August, she offered to let me come up to Canberra and visit her. I spent four days touring all around Canberra. For a city that has a population of about 330,000, the city was very unique and you could definitely tell there was an architectural difference in style. The story of Canberra's birth is very interesting: during the time where Australians were trying to decide on [View Full Entry]

This was taken at about 6.00am at our stopover at Glen Innes and everything was covered in ice.
Hi All Well after two long days on the road and one very cold night at Glen Innes we have arrived at River Heads. This will be our base for the next few months. We haven't really made any plans from here except for a couple of days of rest and recuperation which is sorely needed at the moment. We are both still recovering from that nasty flu. We are thinking of going fishing with John's uncle on Monday for a couple of days and then want to get the boat on the water here in the Sandy Straits. Weather is [View Full Entry]

Hi All, The Formans are finally leaving. After a few delays we are finally ready to depart for the warmer regions of this country. We are leaving tomorrow morning at about 9.00 am and will just drive until we are ready to stop for the night. We have no set agenda so will probably take about three days to get to Hervey Bay. We have not really made any other plans as yet except to do some Barra fishing and to go to the Gympie Muster. As you can imagine John is over the moon about that little excursion. The new [View Full Entry]

Weekend trip Mate Alistair and myself hired a car and headed down to Canberra for a weekend trip. Canberra is about 4 hrs drive from Sydney, so in Australian terms is next door. Though Canberra is a bit cooler than Sydney we had two glorious clear days of sunshine to do our site seeing. First stop was the Austalian War Memorial, and as well as having a wall with the names of all it's dead in conflicts it had a fantastic museum which went into great detail about WWI and WWII. Spent quite a while in here as there was alot [View Full Entry]
