Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Mon Repos

A stranded PSM turtle at Mon Repos beach
We wnjoyed a couple of wondeful days with Andy and Kathy. Did the tourist bit, went to Burrum Heads (lovely spot where the river meets the ocean), and had a nice lunch at a restaraunt on the water at Toogum. We all went on a whale watching cruise, the whales would come right up to the boats and put on an excellent display. A very enjoyable experience, well worth the money. Drove up to Bundaberg and had a look around. Went to Mon Repos which is the beach where the turtles come ashore to breed. The breeding season starts early November [View Full Entry]

I can finally say I've been to all of Australia's states/territories! I spent this weekend in Canberra - which is in it's own state called the Australian Capital Territory. It's been the official capital of Australia since 1908 - although parliament has only sat there since 1927 (there were some delays in moving up from Melbourne thanks to the First World War) - are you getting the impression that I learned a lot during my 28 hours there? I took the 3.5 hour bus ride down from Sydney on Saturday morning - main highway the whole way there, so not a [View Full Entry]

Maree has handed this post over, so. She forgot to mention that we went beach fishing whilst at Woodgate National Park, no fish but Maree did manage to land a seagul. He was an angry little bugger after being dragged backwards thru the surf with a hook in his leg. We had to do a Steve Erwin and throw a towel over his head and sit on him (not really, we did push his head into the sand to stop him biting). He seemed ok when he hobbled off. The professional fishermen patrol the beaches for the mullet schools and net [View Full Entry]

Beza and I patiently waiting to go! August 1 2008
AS Beza and I start the countdown to our trip around the world, we have started to prepare our "Travel blog" so we can keep our friends and loved ones here at home enthralled by our antics, experiences and the odd enivitable disasters. We hope that these entries are entertaining, informative and do not make you too envious. In the end this will provide a great record for Beza that she can keep in the years to come. We depart Canberra for Sydney on 11 September 2008 (yes I know, we did not make the connection at the time) and from [View Full Entry]

Lunch at Tin Can Bay
While we were waiting for our lunch one of the dolphins came into the ramp but didn't hang around for long.
Hi All, Well we don't have much to report except that Hervey Bay is experiencing an unseasonal wet period (surprise, surprise). We went for a drive on Saturday to some of the local areas along the Caloola coast and then on Monday we headed up to Woodgate which is only about two hours from here and stayed in the National Park for a couple of nights. It was a lovely place and would be great on a nice sunny day but the weather was overcast while we were there and we packed up on Wednesday morning in the rain. Just waiting [View Full Entry]

I'm at Bywong in New South Wales at the moment, 20 minutes from Australia's capital city Canberra, about 3 hours from Sydney. We arrived here at 12:30 in the morning to a shivering 5 degrees C temp. At last I saw my first living kangaroo in the wild while we were driving through Aadrik's country home last night along with Pinay friends Acel and Rorie. Fresh from the euphoria of World Youth Day week all around Sydney and catching the cold over the week, it was a restful change to be in Australia's country again. Two weeks ago was spent at [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Well we didn't find the fortune that we had hoped for and didn't even find a stone that was big enough to cut but we had fun trying. We spent a week at Sapphire looking for the elusive stones that we didn't find last time, to no avail. John thinks that we need three strong sons to do the digging for us as it is hard work. We did meet some lovely people and sat around campfires singing and listening to a bush poet and all for free so we can't complain about that. All of the caravan parks [View Full Entry]

Well thankfully the rain stopped just in time for our arrival in Canberra. When we arrived it was dark and damp and after ten hours traveling we just wanted some dinner and a bed so we didn't pay too much attention to our surroundings but we were in for a shock when we woke up. The capital cities that I've been to (not that many admittedly, but enough) are large and bustling with people. Not so with Canberra: after Melbourne we were amazed that there wasn't a high rise in sight and that the place seemed dead - even on a [View Full Entry]

Me on the Parliament roof

Canberra is cold!!! (As in it was sleeting just a little on Friday!) Walking around this capital it also seems really surreal as there are hardly any people! Even the main shopping centre wasn't very busy and on Saturday most of the stores were only open for half the day! The city itself isn't as nice as Melbourne but does have a huge lake in the centre and is surrounded by pretty tree covered hills. On Friday we visited the National Museum of Australia. It was free to get in and Em and I both really enjoyed it. (Yes I know [View Full Entry]
