Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

This was a very nice fish that John caught in the Maroochy River
Well here we are in sunny Canberra and having mixed feelings about being here. It has been lovely to catch up with some of our friends and family. Seems odd though not to be seeing Lisa so I will try and get in a flight to Melbourne to catch up with her and Nick. John has had hayfever since we've been home which he didn't have at all on our travels. We don't have many photos from the last leg of the trip as the weather was not that good. After leaving River Heads we spent two nights in Gympie and [View Full Entry]

Another long day on the bus. Breakfast at 7:30 to leave at 8. Breakfast today was not as good as dinner last night. Cold pancakes, and annoying wait staff who didn't seem to understand what was meant when one just asked for a cup of coffee. Everyone was complaining about the hotel on the bus as we left. According to Bo, this hotel is a bit of a problem and he's mentioned it to Globus, but they haven't taken it off the tour. We'll be filling out our customer surveys tonight, so let's hope they listen to us. First thing we [View Full Entry]

Long day on the bus today. Left the hotel at 8 am. Drove for a couple of hours then stopped for "morning tea" in the town of Glenrowan, home of the Australian bandit/Robin Hood named Ned Kelly. On the next leg of our journey we watched a documentary about kangaroos, but I slept through most of it. Stopped for lunch in a town called Holbrook. Originally it was called Germantown, but due to legislation during the first world war, the name was changed. And then changed a few times apparently. Eventually, the town decided to name itself after a British submariner. [View Full Entry]

Afternoon tea was taken at a rest stop near Gundagai. Apparently there's a song about a dog on a tucker box that mentions the town of Gundagai, but I seem to have missed it on our way from lunch to tea. Got into Canberra around 6 pm. It's an interesting city, built in the shape of a wagon wheel with the Parliament house in the middle and the avenues radiating out. The old Parliament house was built in 1911, and was always intended to be a temporary one, they figured 40 or 50 years. Well, it was over 6, and the [View Full Entry]

Would you believe we met Gail and Mick Hogan at Monduran. Gail is excited to be going fishing (not)
Well folks our tenancy is just about up and we will be leaving River Heads on Saturday. Ann and Bernie arrive home tomorrow so we will hand over the house (whilst sharing a champers of course) and head for Gympie on Saturday to say goodbye to Uncle Geoff and Marie. After that we will head to Buderim and stay a night with Bruce and Jo. Our plan is to stop for a while at Yamba and then keep heading south. We are assuming that the weather is warm enough in Canberra now. We spent another week at Inskip Point but only [View Full Entry]

So, here we are in the National Capital - Canberra. At least the temperatures are a bit better here - I've switched to summer PJs !!! We arrived on Saturday at the Canberra Lodge Caravan Park. As it happens, there is a Vintage Car Club rally & exhibition here this week and most of the cars & their owners are at this park!!! So I've been gob-smacked looking at them all. The oldest hasa steam-driven engine and was built in 1899 !!! On Wedneday the owners are all dressing in period costume for the official exhibition at the showground - should [View Full Entry]

Friday was an exhausting day, I woke up at an unhumanly hour to catch the tour bus to Canberra, the capital. I received a tip that the capital isn’t very exciting but that a day tour is cool, a tip that I would pass on. Our guide Jack, an Aussi gentleman, was really knowledgeable and funny. He made the 4 hour drive down seem short, though it could also have been because I fell asleep at some point. I will say in my defense that the little old woman in the next row fell asleep too and was snoring pretty loudly [View Full Entry]

Left the hotel via taxi the driver was called Jasvinda he was malaysian and the reason that he was in OZ was for his family to have better opportunities such as improved education opportunities. I asked him if he could make a detour via the war memorial, our slight detour to the aiport gave me the insigth that he was a kind and interesting man. Well Adelaide flight becons so will write more when I get there. [View Full Entry]
