Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

As the title says, I'm rather excited! 6 days, and counting, until I'm out of Canberra again. Only for a scant 3 weeks this time, unfortunately, but it's still possible to fit a good chunk of itchy-feet-busting into that space of time! In 6 days, I will be en-route to Tokyo, Japan, with a short stopover in Beijing on the way, and a slightly longer one on the way back. There will be a group of intrepid travellers this time, which should be a rather interesting phenomena for me. The last time I travelled with anyone, well, I ended up splitting [View Full Entry]

I left Sydney on the 20th of December and headed to Canberra with a lovely group and tour guide - "Bananas." We went to the initially modern and ugly Houses of Parliament, which was very educational. We went inside and learnt a bit more about it and came to appreciate it more! You could go up onto the roof garden, symbolising that the people control the parliament and not the other way round. We then drove in the Snowy Mountains. When we got to the hostel we jumped into the hot tub before getting our dinner. A fun time was had [View Full Entry]

16th December 2008 - SEEING THE SIGHTS OF CANBERRA We drove througha few towns on our way to Canberra including Queanbeyan where we stopped to check out a couple of campsites. We decided to risk it for a biscuit and try to get one closer to the city. The Information Centre in Caneberra advised us which site to go to but went on to say that it didn't really matter where we stayed because no where is walkable in Canberra.....everything is too spread out!! Before we drove into the city we booked onto the campsite, showered and got ourselves sorted. We [View Full Entry]

If it's not one thing, it's your mother! Climbed back in van just in time before group of drunk lads tipped up to have more drinks outside van. Left after about 30mins [View Full Entry]

Finally! Here are my pictures from my trip down to Canberra, from when I went down to see Andrew. Took loads of pictures at the War Memorial, the Radio Tower, and other major landmarks around Canberra. Andrew was nice enough to fill me in with his expert knowledge of the places that we went to. We also went to a huge portrait gallery special on the artist Degas, but we weren't allowed to take pictures obviously. We also did some furniture shopping and rearranging so there's a few pictures of Andrew's place in here as well. Enjoy! [View Full Entry]

What we've learned in Australia so far: 1. Everyone's your mate. 2. The UV Index doesn't stop at 10. 3. The people, like the cars, travel down the wrong side of the road. 4. It hurts to carry your pack on sunburnt shoulders. 5. McDonalds has 30 cent ice cream cones and free wi-fi Our Air New Zealand flight was more comfortable than expected with an empty seat beside us and a plethora of movies, t.v. shows, games, and music to choose from on our remote controlled seat-back entertainment system. We had left L.A. on Wednesday November 26, but arrived in [View Full Entry]

Journey to the Capital Words like 'boring'. 'dull' and 'uninteresting' had be banded around when we had asked what friends thought of Canberra, however we wanted to see what the capital city was like for ourselves. Canberra is 350km southeast of Newcastle and it took us 6 hours to drive there in Uncle Mike's car which he had kindly lent us. We underestimated how long it would take and left at 10am, hoping to arrive around 2pm so we could do some sightseeing. In reality we arrived at 4pm and by the time we had found parking, most of the attractions [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Canberra in the rain and wind, we only stayed in Canberra (campsite just outside) for one night, the site wasnt that nice, and once you see a city theres not much else we wanted to do. But we visited the Telstra Tower (Sky tower) for some good views of the city and surrounds, went to the Anac Parade, memorials for all the wars the Aussies have been involved with, really interesting, there was an excellent museum there too, one of the best ones we have ever been too. We left here for a small town called Cowra, we [View Full Entry]
