Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

So we left Gotcha in Mackay after some interesting time at work and some more interesting people and times with the gang! We flew direct to Sydney and stayed the night in the maze backpackers in central sydney, arrived fairly late so didn't see much of the city but SCORE we got upgraded to a 2-person room instead of an 8 bed dorm- much better considering half to residents there were drunk and sick by the time we arrived! The following day we headed off to navigate our way to the novotel to collect our wheels for the next couple of [View Full Entry]

Well we've really done some proper travelling since we last posted, all of 10 days ago! From Sydney to Newcastle to Hunter Valley to the Blue Mountains and finally to Canberra. All in our little camp camper van. We've also got another name for her but first things first.... Before hitting the road we spent the morning at the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps) Remembrance Parade in central Sydney. This was a quite moving experience being up close to thousands of veterans, we've seen the British Remembrance Day Parades before on TV but the atmosphere when you're actually there [View Full Entry]

Hey All, So said goodbye to my travelling Buddy Kevin this morning :( I was really really sad; him and I have travelled side by side for a solid 2 months and he is like my big brother so it feels very weird to now not wake up to him jumping on my head where he's come in drunk or find him asleep at the end of my bed because he couldn't make it up the bunk beed ladder! So many funny times but all part of my great little memories...onwards and upwards tho... tomorrow myslef, Jack B and Brooke head [View Full Entry]

On Valentine's Day we said goodbye to Kosciuszko National Park and drove north to Tumut and then headed east, taking the back way into Canberra via the state forest trails and Brindabella (although we don't actually recall passing through Brindabella)! We arrived in Canberra, stopping for lunch at Commonwealth Park, and then drove to the Canberra South Motor Park in Fyshwick. We decided to stay for a week and this place offered us the best rate as well as being centrally located not far from town. On Sunday we met up for lunch at Commonwealth Park again, but this time with [View Full Entry]

We left our coastal paradise of Merimbula last Friday (13th). Hard to make progress up the coast to Bateman's Bay as every 4 or 5 miles there was another amazing bay/beach to explore. For the record, Kianga, north of Narooma would get our vote. Resisted temptation to ride the surf - had a drink and a cig instead. Didn't give Bateman's Bay much of a chance to impress - drove straight through, so we could drive the highway up to Canberra the light. This was Friday afternoon and the whole of Canberra was rushing down the mountain to the sea for [View Full Entry]

This great sofa was in the CSIRO Discovery Centre. This area concentrated on matters of health.
Day 101 Today we packed up the trailer ready to leave the campsite, the weather again was cold with a slight drizzle, not the weather we want nor like. Most sites you have to be off by 10.00 am which wasn’t a problem, but that meant dragging the trailer through the city centre. We had all day, to amuse ourselves, however we were heading back to Woodstock later to see Robert and Helen, because today Susan returns from Africa for 6 weeks, she has not been home for nearly 2 years. Caroline and myself, love technological things, Science etc, so today [View Full Entry]

Day 100 Just imagine, having a child that you loved and provided a safe and protective home for, then one day a total stranger came to your door and said that we are taking this child away from you. Imagine you as a child been taken away and put in an orphanage, then been told that you were taken away because your parents didn’t love you, only to find out years later that this was not the truth. How would you feel? Today we have been away for 100 days, and we are in very cold Canberra, cold enough to need [View Full Entry]

Hot again - closer to 40C today. It was too hot to do much today. I went to the National Archives this afternoon. Apart from the general displays of records like the original proclamation of Federation from the UK they had displays showing things like documents relating to the "Little Red School Book" debate in the early 70s (hands up those who can remember that?) They also had a feature exhibition of records and documents relating to the aftermath of the 1st World War (that was the war that was going to end all wars) on Australian society. The TV news [View Full Entry]
