Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Narooma. Big offshore island is the striking feature. Then on to Bateman's Bay and Ulladulla. Tuesday. The striking feature in Mollymook (a bird) is a flat rock headland which is triple-tiered. As waves break over the front they replenish the top pool. These rocks are perfectly flat so the water overflows the edge evenly for 50 meters at each level. Would be the envy of many an engineered urban water feature designer. Looming in the distance the south arm of Jervis Bay. Sunny day and the water so warm. Ulladulla good spruiking. Wednesday. Driving to Canberra, stopped at Braidwood for hal [View Full Entry]

Canberran keskusta

Me mentiin katolle ihailemaan maisemia. Tai siis puskia! Turvamiehet vähän katteli, et mitähän ihme hoopoja tänne on taas tullu, ku pyörittiin siellä katolla. Journeying from Melbourne to Sydney (Sorry cannot get the pics to work.) We traveled in a newish Territory from Hertz overland to Sydney via some lovely small towns in upstate Victoria. I kept wondering why they were talking about Victorian issues when I thought that they were a century away. The penny dropped eventually. We stayed in Bright and Bentwood which are delightful towns full of gold mining history and the subsequent importance of wool now surpassed by beef and other products. We lost our way a few times ending up in the high country where there we real signs of [View Full Entry]
