Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Hey all, I had sent home the list of emails for my tour group, so I just put them on to the subscription list the other day, but it lookds like I have to update a blog in order to show them how to get here! So for all of you who keep looking at the blog, this isn't really that exciting. And for those looking for photos, I am endeavouring to get them on there, it just takes so long! I just need a day to sit down and put them up so all can see. Probably in the new [View Full Entry]

Australia’s In the Midst of a Drought?
Australia’s In the Midst of a Drought?
Getting wet outside of the Australian War Memorial.
Canberra was a nice quick stop. We were here for just under twenty-four hours, but we were still able to pack in most of the major attractions. Canberra, the nation’s capital, was a planned city, and it is very easy to tell. The streets are wide and the road layout is geometric, very appealing to the urban planner in me, but not very interesting in terms of getting a feel for the city. This was what we were expecting though. What we weren’t expecting was the downtown area to be as untidy as it was. It wasn’t dirty by any means, [View Full Entry]

Yep, there it is..
On the way to Newcastle we figured we could just pop in and check out Canberra - it is the capital city after all!! It was a pretty nice place but had a really bizarre feel to it because it was totally deserted. We checked out Parliament House which was pretty interesting. It has a grass roof (called a "green roof") and you can go up there and check out the amazing views. We also talk a walk into town which was nice until it got a bit black and then started thundering. We were going to make a dash back [View Full Entry]

Hi all. So, I've now been back over a week, back into work and all that comes with that. Nothing exciting to report. Jet lag wasn't too bad (although both Phil and I only got about 4 hours sleep over the two days it took to fly home, so that wasn't very nice), and we ended up getting on the same flight back to Canberra (there are flights every 20 mins it seems, although we were perplexed as to why so many people were flying to Canberra ;p), so that was good. I really didn't want to leave Phil in the [View Full Entry]

In Front of Parliament
In Front of Parliament
Quack! We're in front of the Parliament!
So after another day in Sydney, I had enough of the busy city. I feel that Sydney is like NYC. All the tourists want to go there...it's the place to go. But I'm not a huge fan of NYC, and I'm not a huge fan of Sydney. Especially after the wonderful hike in the Blue Mountains...it was a bit of a shock being back downtown. I spent the last day in Sydney by visiting the Museum of New South Wales, and hanging out with two girls I met at the hostel. And then I was off to Canberra. I've been told [View Full Entry]

Lounging Around
In the Wild!
Lake Burley Griffin

The drive to Canberra was the longest of this road trip, taking me almost 500km south. This part of the world is peppered with corking place names and I saw signs to the towns of Orange, Wee Jasper, Wombat, and Murrumbateman. I stopped at Cowra, site of a Japanese PoW camp during World War 2 from which nearly 400 prisoners had staged a break-out. The escape and ensuing round-up left more than half of them dead. They were buried in Cowra and their graves were tended by the local Returned Servicemen's League, a gesture that resulted in an official Japanese War [View Full Entry]

Dec 2. Birds of a morning. Spruiked til noon. Drove to Canberra. Dec 3. Woke in my usual spot at the bottom of Mt. Ainslie to a mob of kangaroos, the gravelly chatter of a flock of gang-gang, miner, rosella, mynah, magpei, galah, cockatoo, king parrot. Eastern rosella: red head, breast, back yellow green, scaled black, yellow, blue, green white etc. On top Mt. Ainslie white winged clough almost all black til it flies. Not much to say. No news. Coffs Harbour
Coffs Harbour
View of the harbour.
My first stop after i left Sydney was good old Coffs Harbour which is further up the east coast and took about 8 hours to reach on the train, the train felt really slow but when i spoke to people who did the same journey on the bus it turned out to be pretty much the same. I chose Coffs Harbour only because it was the first place i had heard of, it was a nice little town and the weather was good while i was there, it felt really small after Sydney but also a nice change. As it happened [View Full Entry]

My buddy Ian, we're chilling on the couch watching Ricky Gervais. Good times.
Canberra is known for the trivial distinction of being Capital of Australia. Or at least that's the case in Trivial Pursuits. People casually and confidently declare "Pffft. Sydney's the capital of Australia, duh." Only to have the "Sorry, the card says Canberra" thrown in their faces. Is it wrong of them? Is it another Moops answer? Nay, sorry. Canberra is indeed the capital of Oz, and not just the Federal Capital, it is also the Porn Capital of Australia. The [View Full Entry]

It's nice to be grateful

Today I got up early to catch the Explorer Bus and took a tour of Canberra. It was a HOT HOT HOT day today!! I first went to the australian War Memorial. It was very cool to see all the planes and guns and stuff. Then I watched a film on World War II. Then I went to the Lake Burley Griffin. Look some pics of the man made lake and the Captain Cook fountain..which shoots 90 metres into the air. Then I went to the Parliament House. I cost over 1 billion Dollars to Build. It was very pretty with [View Full Entry]
