Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well. Since my last entry many things have happened, both good and bad, home and abroad and with varying emotions. During my last entry I was informed, by mum, that Grandad was not very well. In fact he was in hospital and had not been given long to live. This was strange, as just before I left England in the summer I had seen him and he was fighting fit and in great form. Over the next few days I was kept informed of his condition, which more times than not was deteriorating. Then the phone call came that he had [View Full Entry]

After Manly on Sunday we spent the next day in downtown Sydney. Wandered through Hyde park, the botanical gardens and our around the opera house for the most part. Very cool spot. Pam was especially impressed with the bats in the gardens but they wern't much into posing for photos. For anyone wondering (I was) the opera house gets its colour from tiles all over the roof. White ones in the center of the panels and tan ones around the edges... Monday we went out to the famous Bondi beach. We have decided that Manly is much better and figure anyone [View Full Entry]

So I didn't mean to, but I've ended up visiting every city again in the past couple of weeks. After the massive road trip ending in Melbourne, I was off to Canberra to visit Anthony. It was nice to just relax after the road trip. I had issues with the public transport in Canberra, as the buses ran only once per hour during off-peak times, and of course I managed to miss the bus, or lose track of time, and end up waiting another hour. One afternoon I managed to miss the bus twice! So I didn't really see anything new [View Full Entry]

The home stretch was in sight as we left Berlin. We spent two days in Cologne, in western Germany, enjoying non-backpacker-like luxury in a hotel overlooking the Rhine - other highlights of Cologne were the great food in the local breweries and the surprising number of professional beggars crowding the entry to the local cathedral. We then flew to London for a few days and finished off some essentials before heading back to Sydney - the National Gallery in London was well worth a look and a day trip to Oxford (didn't meet the romanticised image that I had in my [View Full Entry]

We spent our last day in Katoomba exploring the Blue Mountains a little bit. We took a hike down into the valley (a hike with over 1000 steps! - luckily we did that on the way down, not up!) and took the Scenic Railway back up. The Scenic Railway was really different - it was similar to a roller coaster with a cable pulling us up at a 45 degree angle! 52 degrees was the steepest part - yikes. It had been used way back to haul coal from the mines located at the bottom of the mountain. We also hiked [View Full Entry]

Some of us were still on adrenalin highs from last night’s athleticism. My mood was purely tea and Tim Tam related after a morning of relaxation and gossip catch up with Eleanor and Andrew - the final episode of Home and Away in Australia being an exciting topic (I’ll hold off saying anything here as I’d hate to ruin the experience for many English viewers in 6 months time…). Even so we all looked fabulous as we arrived at the Royal Canberra Yacht Club at Yarralumla. The day was warm and a bit cloudy but fairly pleasant overall. The place brings [View Full Entry]

The Last Blog Home. Home sweet Home. Questions, Queries, Challenges, Confusion, Excitement, Anxiety, Sadness, Awe and Pride. Needless to say, at the end of a trip like the one we've had, a plethora of feelings and emotions come flying in from all directions. So, we're back at home. Are we different? Did we accomplish what we set out to achieve? Was it worth all that money? What have we learnt about ourselves, each other and the world? Big questions, no? And to be frank, I don't think we have all the answers. With more time and distance from our experience [View Full Entry]

Tensions were high the night before the wedding - and that was just the relatives! We arrived at Belconnen AMF Bowling in sunny Canberra (after an adventurous lap of honour but that’s another story…) for a Marman vs Smith bowl-off. The Marmans started off in fine form with Mikey, Lisa and Bevan cutting up the lanes with some fantastic displays of bowling. The Smith family weren’t so bad themselves, although there were rumours of illegal substitutions. Undeterred, the Marmans pushed on and won with an average of just over 1 point per player. Well done all those involved, not [View Full Entry]
