Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

Well folks we have just had a weeks fishing at Lake Boondooma which is about two hours north west of Gympie, and sadly have to report that we did not catch a single fish. Geoff and Marie caught three nice Bass in the week that we were there but we came up with absolutely nothing. We did, however, catch some redclaw which were very tasty. It was a very pleasant week though with a campfire every night and after the mist had cleared of a morning we had reasonable days. Geoff and Marie's neighbours, Skip and Marg, joined us for a [View Full Entry]

The students have to keep journal describing their experience. I thought you might want to read what one student wrote of her expereince after visiting the War Memorial in Canberra. "Splashes of color lined the names of those who gave their lives, red poppies stained by the blood they freely gave. As I stook there in the silence, soaking it all in, I was amazed. The eternal flame burned brightly in its resting place, keeping the memory alive. The brilliant colors of stained glass illuminated to show the faces of the brave men and women who served their country. The Austrailian [View Full Entry]

Well folks I have finally found time to upload the promised pictures. We are now at our second home at River Heads and Ann and Bernie have left for Gove. We will spend a couple of days getting the red dust out of the boat and would like to do some fishing around Fraser. On the way home from Weipa we stopped at a caravan park in Mareeba and hosed off the truck, camper and boat but when we arrived here and took the cover off the boat there was red dust everywhere. Most of the photos are from the Atherton [View Full Entry]

We know we’ve been a bit slack with the blogging but it turns out it makes a difference when you don’t have easy internet access. Sorry about that. We write our blogs most of the time in Word and then publish them online when we can. We don’t have too much of an excuse for last week: we were pretty blog-lazy. I have to say thanks to all of you commenting on our blogs, we love it! It was a beautiful week in Sydney last week and spent our time golfing (well, if you call 3 holes in 1 hour golfing), [View Full Entry]

Day 66 (Thursday 25/06/09, NJJ) Cold out. Jay was cold all night. Started day at National Portrait Gallery. Saw the Vanity Fair Exhibition (some of the pictures left me speechless) that we'd planned to go to, walked around the rest of the gallery too. Next stop was the National War Memorial and Museum - this was fantastic. I lost count of the number of times that I had tears in my eyes walking around there as it's so moving. The museum is also one of the best I've ever been too. I looked out for John in the Korean War photos! [View Full Entry]

Day 65 (Wednesday 24/06/09, NJJ) I nearly ran an old man over this morning. I drove the J.R. for the first time and wasn't used to the the pedals, they were far apart as the steering column was where the brake should be but luckily as the man carried on walking I missed him, no accident after all. I knew the exact position of the pedals after that near miss. Drove to Cann River. Decided to take inland road towards Canberra. Passed from Victoria into New South Wales. Saw wildlife along the way. It rained quite a bit, a little depressing. [View Full Entry]

Hi all, Sorry for the length of time it has taken to get something on the blog but we have not had the coverage unitl now. I have included some pictures that probably tell their own story. We had 5 weeks at Weipa and left with a freezer full of fish. We caught a variety of fish including cod, bream, Queenfish, Jewfish, Grunter, Salmon, Tuskfish, Stripeys and Mother in Laws but no Barramundi. It was certainly a learning experience and we have thoroughly enjoyed it. The weather was certainly tropical with not much difference between day and night temperatures and the [View Full Entry]

Hi! Here are some kickass photos for you! Some of the photos were taken from a Viterra Grain Elevator, where we toured. Enough grain to fill 100 railcars (literally) comes through that facility every WEEK. Almost all of the products that come through this elevator go through a long, long journey, ending up in Asia. In Asia, its packaged and occasionally shipped back to us with the "Product of Canada" label stamped on it. Man, can you say, redundant travel? Malt Barley and Feed Barley are the only grains that came from that facility that are NOT shipped overseas. Othe cool [View Full Entry]

Someone Else's Stuff

We picked up our camper van on a sunny Sydney Sunday morning. We got a new improved model, which had a kitchen inside so we could cook whilst still staying snug and cosy in the van. It is much bigger than the last couple of vans we had but didn't cost much more for reasons we aren't too sure about but who's complaining? :-) Our first destination was to be the nation's much derided capital, Canberra. Canberra is a planned town built following Australian federation in 1901, but it took them a lot longer than that to build it obviously! We [View Full Entry]
