Background: Aboriginal settlers arrived on the continent from Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the first Europeans began exploration in the 17th century. No formal territorial claims were made until 1770, when Capt. James COOK took possession in the name of Great Britain. Six colonies were created in the late 18th and 19th centuries; they federated and became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. The new country took advantage of its natural resources to rapidly develop its agricultural and manufacturing industries and to make a major contribution to the British effort in World Wars I and II. In recent decades, Australia has transformed itself into an internationally competitive, advanced market economy. It boasted one of the OECD's fastest growing economies during the 1990's, a performance due in large part to economic reforms adopted in the 1980's. Long-term concerns include pollution, particularly depletion of the ozone layer, and management and conservation of coastal areas, especially the Great Barrier Reef.

..it was so peaceful for a capital city!
G'day mate, We drove for about 8 1/2 hours to reach the Australias capital - Canberra. Rob was quite tired and had done really well to drive that far in one go. We chose a camp site that was as near to the centre as poss called Canberra motor village. It wasn't one of the ones in our top tourist book as they didn't have any at all, quite strange when its the capital.Although this was news to me - as i always thought it was Sydney! Next day we caught the bus to the National musuem which was free. It [View Full Entry]

Hey everybody! Well i have just finished my first week of classes. its pretty nuts to even consider school right now, but i guess it had to happen... as its the reason im here. the set up is different here, you have 3 hours of each class per week that can be made up of either lectures or tutorials/labs. its not like you have 2 classes monday wednesday friday, and another 3 tuesday thursday like at home. all of the lectures are posted, but the textbooks are costing me a small fortune as always. Tonight i believe is the university bar [View Full Entry]

Well it seems I have lost the camera that I just purchased, so that sucks very much. But I am going to pick up another one soon I suppose, though I will probably be very paranoid to bring it out. Sheena came and visited me on Thursday with JM, and we partied at the University bar for the rubics cube party... you had to dress in all different colours (like blue shirt, red shorts etc.) and by the end of the night you had to be all one colour, so that was pretty cool. This is also the same night that [View Full Entry]

Une journee suffit! Canberra, Aussie capital, has not got many things to offer but congress places, 2 parliaments and lots of green parks. One day is enough!! [View Full Entry]

Ok ok ok.... so Australia !!! Sorry this has been so long coming (that’s if you’re not sick of receiving the updates email yet!). It took a few days to get to Sydney from Kota Kinabalu in Borneo. I had to fly from KK to Johor the southernmost state of Malaysia on the Peninsula, and then take a bus to Singapore. This is only a short journey by distance, but it includes taking one bus to the Malaysia border, disembarking to clear Malaysia customs, taking another bus along the causeway which links Malaysia to Singapore, and the disembarking for Singapore customs, [View Full Entry]
