Tonight is the Captain’s Farewell Party before dinner and our favorite shipboard entertainment, Krew Kapers. After a day of packing suitcases as Mariner sails towards Los Angeles and home, we’re ready for some fun. Roy, our favorite waiter, will be singing the final solo. “We’ll be sitting near the front on the left-hand side,” Alan tells him at breakfast. When Roy enters the stage at the beginning of the show, he spots us immediately and the waving begins. The crew does a fantastic job of dancing, lip-synching and actual singing. There’s not an empty seat in the theatre as passengers clap and yell when they recognize a favorite crewmember. Alan, Kathryn and I feel like proud parents when Roy begins the last number, “The Impossible Dream.” The lights dim, he steps to the front of the ... read more
As scheduled, we visited one of the most spectacular natural sceneries in the world, Banff. In just a few moments we saw more mountains then some will see in their entire life. The weather was perfect, sunny and cool. We stayed in the most amazing hotels (www.fairmont.com/banffsprings/ + www.fairmont.com/lakelouise/ ) with the help of Mike and Cathy. The service and food were perfect. Definitely one of the most stunning places in the world. ... read more
Four States, Three Seasons, Two Weeks, One Holiday
Published: April 18th 2006North America » United States » Kansas » LeavenworthApril 3 - 17, 2006 Cortez, Colo. - Leavenworth, Kan. Mile 5,375 1,541 Miles this Leg We are now balanced at the easternmost edge of Kansas, more than halfway across the continent from the coast we started on (see Route Map). Since leaving Port Townsend on Feb. 9, we have traveled more than 5,000 miles in nine weeks. Yet we have used up just a quarter of the time allotted for this road trip, and—one might hope—just a quarter of the adventures! This blog entry recounts our time in the Four Corners region of the Southwest, as well as our arrival in America’s Midwest. Which brings us to the unseasonable seasons… In our recent travels through northern New Mexico, spring was properly in force (albeit with less-than-usual rainfall), but we got a good dose of “winter” ... read more
San Cristóbal de las Casas
Published: November 4th 2006North America » Mexico » Chiapas » San Cristobal de las CasasThis part of the trip started in worst possible way, as we got to the airport in Mexico City on april 13th, with our tickets to San Cristobal booked on the internet. The clerk who spoke some english just shook her head, and said we was there on the wrong date. I had booked the tickets for the 16th instead, and not really checked it closely enough, aswell as we had done some changes on where and for how long etc before we left home. Hopefully we could be rebooked, but she wasn't very hopeful, as this day is one of the busiest days of travel, the last day before the easter celebrations. She told us to be back in 45 minutes to see if there was some spare seats. She wrote our names on the ... read more
HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!! Well it’s my last night in Calgary and the last 3 days have been great. I really want to thank everyone that came out, it was great to see you all before I left! It meant the world to me to see you all out. Those of you that didn’t come out, I’m sure you had your reasons. First night out at Ranchmans was a blast! The 2nd night at Cowboys was a little rough to get started but once the beer started flowing it got crazy from there. What was supposed to be a nice night relaxing and catching up on everything turned into another 4am Denny’s run with my most hated acquaintance ever, you know who you are!! Lucky she’s cute or things could have gotten ugly ;-) Today has been ... read more

Started the day with great excitement at the thought of seeing pods of Orcas, followed by great disappointment at our breakfast! Our hotel claims they provide a free continental breakfast, and when we checked in they informed us that we would need to collect vouchers; however we didn’t think too much about that at the time. At reception we collected our breakfast vouchers which turned out to be Mc Donald vouchers for a free coffee and muffin!!! Continental breakfast my foot! I guess we will be frequenting the neighbouring Mc D’s. Liisa nipped in to collect breakfast, orange juice and fruit and fibre muffin, then we made a swift departure and drove to the nearest camera shop 30 minutes away so Gail could buy a new camera lens cover! As Liisa hopped out the car, her ... read more
Can you imagine a year ago I decided I wanted to leave Canada and continue my travels across Europe? When I think of my one year adventure across the world in those terms it seems so incredibly amazing how fast time does fly by. Then again any possible way I think about my trip I find it is incredible and think I am SO lucky to be able to fly over the rainbow. Here is my planned itinerary so far. The beginning is more relaxed and a take it as it comes style as I try to settle in and hopefully not buckle under the pressured search for a home and job. Then as I progress and get some income I’d like to pick up the pace a fair bit (and hopefully take in some concerts ... read more
After a fascinating six weeks on the road, it was a good feeling to be back in Canada Friday afternoon, and even better to be back in Esterhazy tonight! My return flights were without serious incident: Air Canada ripped a handle off my new suitcase (it was pretty heavy I guess), and kept us waiting in the plane for an extra 40 minutes in Vancouver before taking off today, but the flights themselves were smooth and the weather here is much warmer than I expected. In fact, my room is hotter than any I had in Guatemala while I was away, including the two nights at Tikal where daytime temperatures hovered around +35°C. I'll try not to say "si" when you say something I agree with or call my name. It will take me a bit ... read more

After a satisfying bowl of raisin bran, we packed the car and headed north to the University of Washington to view the campus, which is renowned for the cherry tree blossoms this time of year. After driving around for what seemed like ages we finally stumbled across a parade of cherry trees in full bloom. They were a beautiful shade of a baby pink set against a back drop of green lawns and mountains…. Stunning! After the Naomi and Claudia photo shoot, we continued north to Skagit to the tulip festival. This really was a sight to behold, rows and rows of colourful tulips, they looked like Joseph’s technicoloured coat! The camera really didn’t do the colours justice, such was the vibrancy of the reds and pinks! This seemed to be a major tourist attraction as ... read more
