The Countdown is always difficult. The final getting ready for a trip, no matter how long or short. This trip is to Maine for just a week. Stop the mail. Stop the newspapers. Get the dog to a kennel. Get all the clothes clean and pressed. Set up the light timers. Get out the door. But the hassel is usually worth it. [View Full Entry]

King Kamehameha Day was celebrated over the past weekend, with a Parade, crafts fair and entertainment in the park. Though a Highway that goes completely around the Island of Oahu is named after him, as well as a large prestigious school and a statue of him is erected in a prominent location downtown, I have to admit I know very little about him. We were really not taught much in schools in my days about his life, only that he united the Hawaiian Islands. Today however, I think Hawaiian history and subjects receive more exposure in schools. From what I’ve read [View Full Entry]

This past weekend a festival called “The Great Hawaiian Folk Life Festival” was held on Sat. and Sun. at the Kapiolani Park in Waikiki. Also held was a Parade through Waikiki, which I was not able to attend, to honor Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole, a popular Hawaiian Prince known as the People’s Prince, who instituted the Hawaiian Homestead Act which enables needy Native Hawaiian affordable housing up to this very day. A main beach in Waikiki is named after him, this past Monday was a State holiday to honor him, and a long highway known as the Kalanianaole Hwy. runs [View Full Entry]

The Answer Is: The Byrds of Paradise, Lost, Baywatch Hawaii and North Shore. Question: Name a few shows that were filmed at North Shore on Oahu? Which is incidentally the topic of this Blog, covering about a 30 mile length from the historic and colorful town of Haleiwa in the west to Turtle Bay Resort in Kuilima to the east. In between are mostly residential homes and agricultural industries in communities of Kawailoa, Sunset Beach, Waimea, Pupukea, Waialee and Kawela. Of course, the North Shore is instantly associated with monstrous waves, at least to the Locals here and the surfi [View Full Entry]

Da Rock, Waimea Bay.

It's early, as I bicycle away from Orr Hot Springs. It's also cold. Arriving into the valleys that contain ancient redwoods the frosty air that is 20 degrees below that 10 miles east of here is notable; especially when riding. I have the entirity of Montgomery Woods State Park to myself even though it is the weekend, and I make a pleasant morning of it. I climb the first steep hill, leaving my bicycle behind, and after a short walk I reach the grove, a thin expanse marking one of the last virgin redwood forests in the region. Trees dwarfing me, [View Full Entry]

12 June -- well, today we expect to arrive at the Grand Teton National Park. In the last few days, We encountered our first rainstorm as we neared Kansas City, and - yes - the small pass-through window into the camper leaks in spite of the pounds of caulk Tom used before we left. We’ll see how bad it gets before we caulk the whole window. We’ve found that credit card companies are becoming incredibly cautious about fraud. Bear in mind that we called our CC company before we left TN, telling them that we’d be on the road to Alaska [View Full Entry]

It’s never raises more than a few feet above the water. It’s straight as an arrow. The fact still remains; Pontchartrain Causeway is the longest bridge in the world. 25 miles of bridge between Metairie and Mandeville in Louisiana. One might think that this would be an interesting ride. The fact is, it’s probably hard to find a less interesting ride. Look to your left, there is water a few feet down. Look to your right, there’s water a few feet down. Look in front of you, there’s probably a car. It seems unlikely that anyone would drive off the bridge [View Full Entry]

Pano of line of sea stacks at Rialto Beach
Saturday morning, October 2, 1999, I drove my RX-7 from Olympia to Fife to pickup a rental 28 foot Class C RV from a rental company. Leaving the Mazda at the rental place, I drove the big buggy back home to pack it for our trip around the Olympic Peninsula. Our toy poodle, Shadow, is 10 months old now and became excited when he saw the RV in the driveway. We took him on our mosey down the Oregon Coast in May, and when he saw the buggy, he knew that it was a special time. As soon as we opened [View Full Entry]
