Love Exploring says: One of the most famous boulevards in all of America, Bourbon Street is the raucous hub of nightlife in New Orleans, a city which knows how to party. Named after the royal French House of Bourbon, the street is jam-packed with neon-drenched bars, night-time revelers and the perpetual sound of jazz music. Time your trip for Mardi Gras in February and you'll find the famed balconies here strung with decorations and the street alive with parades. On my first trip to Nawlins in the 80s, I am strolling down Bourbon Street, when I see a guy who once worked for our company. He was rather short but had very curly hair. How did I notice him among the throngs of revelers? It amazes me to this day. The excitement of the Super Bowl ... read more

Today's travels took us from Oklahoma through Texas to New Mexico. Again, mostly uneventful. We did get to visit Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo, TX. It's a set of cars buried nose first in the dirt. James was quite intrigued. The weather was VERY cold and windy. My car normally gets 40 MPG and today it was hovering at 26 MPG due to fighting the wind. We saw leftover snow in some places as well. Millie is unimpressed with the cold. James accurately let us know we were in the desert but when he saw cows he said they didn't belong in the desert, they belong on the farm. I told him maybe it was a desert farm and he said, hm, that makes sense. We made it to Albuquerque and are staying with Scott's sister and ... read more

From Mashed: The muffuletta is another stellar example of Italian immigrants bringing culinary traditions to a new world of flavor. The sandwich is named after the bread used in its making, a traditional Sicilian round loaf topped with sesame seeds. A muffuletta is built on Italian bread, incorporates Italian meats and cheeses, and was even created by Sicilian immigrants -- yet the same style of sandwich does not exist in Italy. The muffuletta has international origins, but it was born, bred, and schmeared on the streets of New Orleans, one of the country's best sandwich stops. The story goes like this: Italian laborers would stop in Central Grocery for lunch, enjoying a loaf of bread, meats, cheeses, and an olive salad, perhaps with a few sips of a full-bodied red. Grocery store proprietor Salvatore Lupo ... read more

Today was just a travel day. 8 hours from Memphis, TN to Edmond, OK. Saw a bit of snow along the way, but otherwise easy travel. The plus of today was getting to stay with friends. Tim was Scott's roommate while he was attending GA Tech. We attended his wedding to Kristy 6 years ago. We are very grateful they let us come and stay. I know James appreciated having room to play. Millie got to run around their backyard with their pups and got some exercise as well. Also, Tim makes some good ribs! ... read more

So this will be my first post in the TravelBlog community. Still learning the ropes on how to use the site. I have been retired for about a month now. I have decided to revisit a project that interested me before I started doing all the travel for Motorola. My kids explained to me how important it is for young people to have access to the internet. They need either a laptop or tablet to do school work, and to look for work. Having worked in law enforcement for so many years, I am well aware that there are segments of our community that just do not have the ability to purchase a new laptop/tablet. In the past, I was using my time to source, and refurbish 2nd/3rd generation equipment that I could get out to ... read more

With po'boys, jambalaya, beignets, and more, New Orleans is home to countless legendary foods to call its own. No other dish is as iconic throughout Louisiana as gumbo, however; it's actually the state's official dish. It's a rich stew made with a dark brown roux; the "holy trinity" of onions, bell peppers, and celery; a rich stock; and any combination of shrimp, chicken, sausage, or other meats. Gumbo is usually thickened with either okra or filé powder (dried, ground sassafras leaves), and served over rice. My personal favorite here are the oysters, followed by the Po' Boys, and the gumbo. But just about anywhere, everywhere, the food is so different from any part of our great country, in fact in the world! Nawlins cuisine is uniquely Nawlins, and America. For oysters, I prefer the famous Acme ... read more

With 20+ locations throughout the South, it might be tempting to brush Ruby Slipper off as a chain — after all, there are plenty of one-of-a-kind restaurants to be found in the Big Easy. Yet, the operating restaurant group, Ruby Sunshine, knows how to maintain local flavor and quality across all of its locations. While each brings its own unique flair, decor, and overall vibe, every slipper has one thing in common: Top-tasting brunch food. The menu is a hodgepodge of Southern favorites with funky, elevated twists. Take, for example, the pig candy bacon bites starter, consisting of Applewood-smoked bacon bites with a mouthwateringly crunchy, caramelized candy glaze. Eggs Benny are a specialty — Ruby Slipper offers quite a few varieties. The eggs cochon, a Southern twist on eggs Benedict in ... read more

Mashed: Unlike some sandwiches with strict ingredient lists, you can turn almost anything into a Po' Boy. Shrimp is probably the most popular protein ingredient, but Louisiana chefs have stuffed bread full of catfish, hot sausage, roast beef, crab, oysters, and anything else caught up in the nets last weekend. Three things make a Po Boy: a unique French bread that's not quite a baguette, a typically fried protein, and, perhaps most importantly, eating them in New Orleans. Besides those key features, the sandwiches are often served with lettuce, tomatoes, a remoulade or mustard sauce, and a rich history that envelops this sandwich like the wafting scents of fresh bread. New Orleans-based historians have spent over a decade tracking down the Po' Boy to settle once and for all where the sandwich got its stripes. It ... read more

For some reason I couldn’t sleep the night before leaving. Ride to airport uneventful and the flight to FLL smooth. Check in routine and then took a little nap. Marylou arrived shortly after Seven and we shared a salad and we’re in bed by nine. She had been traveling since 3am. Beautiful day, we had coffee then went down to breakfast. I tried grits and followed the lead of a fellow guest. Added brown sugar and honey. Very good. Then I took MaryLou on a walk. We exited the bar area to the dining terrace and found that all the gates to the pool area were chained. When we tried to get back in we found that all the doors were locked. Thought about climbing the fence …..not. I had my phone so I called the ... read more

Day one had us driving through Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi on our way to Memphis, Tennessee. Lunch was courtesy of Buccee's because that is the only way to start a road trip! The drive was easy and we had great weather until we hit Memphis. Due to some sportsball game being on, Scott stayed at the hotel with Millie (our dog) while James and I went on an adventure. About 15 minutes away, in Bellevue, is Bellevue Baptist Church. It is HUGE and not easily missed. They offer a large, indoor playground that is free for anyone to come play. It was a great way for James to run off some energy. All in all a successful, albeit not super exciting day. ... read more
