United States Travel Blogs

As much as it is both a symbol of freedom and a source of controversy, the United States of America still beckons millions from all over the world with its promises of freedom and opportunity, or what is better known as the American Dream. With a population founded on immigration, the US has often been referred to as a virtual melting pot, where diversity in culture, race, religion, and language blend together to produce a single, and for the most part, united nation. But to the first-time visitor, America also presents seemingly contradictory qualities. It's a country where conservative values face off against alternative lifestyles and contentious division is widely apparent in the country's politics and debate over issues like abortion, gay marriage and health care.

With so much dichotomy, the United States can offer the traveler a breadth of sightseeing and adventure. From the Atlantic to the Pacific, the rich American landscape encompasses sweeping mountains ranges, national parks, sun-kissed beaches and wide open desert spaces. With such a vast terrain, it's been said that one of the best ways to see America is by road trip. Pick up a copy of the pop culture favorite “On The Road” by Jack Kerouac and hop on the famous Route 66 for a cross country sample of American culture the adventure-seeking traveler cannot miss.

Highlights

Tips and Hints

 • Exchange rates mean that America can be expensive for travelers visiting from other countries. Make sure to bring extra cash, especially for spending in the big cities.
 • Travel Insurance The US has some of the best health care in the world but it's also extremely expensive. Travel insurance is a must.
 • Tipping is customary in restaurants and is not included in the bill. Adding on a tip of 15-20% is standard.
 • Accommodation Although not as common as hotels or motels, there are youth hostels in The States.

The Countdown is always difficult. The final getting ready for a trip, no matter how long or short. This trip is to Maine for just a week. Stop the mail. Stop the newspapers. Get the dog to a kennel. Get all the clothes clean and pressed. Set up the light timers. Get out the door. But the hassel is usually worth it. [View Full Entry]

On the evening of March 31, a fire broke out in a Unit, 2 units away causing mostly smoke damage. So the past 3 weeks were spent cleaning, vacuuming, scrubbing, washing, etc. to remove the odor so I could finally move back in. After 3 weeks, I was able to accomplish pretty much was I could to make the place livable, and not a day too soon, as the 23rd Annual Hawaii Pacific University Intercultural Day was to take place, in downtown. Though I only discovered it during the past 5 years of it occurrence, it does give me something [View Full Entry]

King Kamehameha Day was celebrated over the past weekend, with a Parade, crafts fair and entertainment in the park. Though a Highway that goes completely around the Island of Oahu is named after him, as well as a large prestigious school and a statue of him is erected in a prominent location downtown, I have to admit I know very little about him. We were really not taught much in schools in my days about his life, only that he united the Hawaiian Islands. Today however, I think Hawaiian history and subjects receive more exposure in schools. From what I’ve read [View Full Entry]

12 June -- well, today we expect to arrive at the Grand Teton National Park. In the last few days, We encountered our first rainstorm as we neared Kansas City, and - yes - the small pass-through window into the camper leaks in spite of the pounds of caulk Tom used before we left. We’ll see how bad it gets before we caulk the whole window. We’ve found that credit card companies are becoming incredibly cautious about fraud. Bear in mind that we called our CC company before we left TN, telling them that we’d be on the road to Alaska [View Full Entry]

It's early, as I bicycle away from Orr Hot Springs. It's also cold. Arriving into the valleys that contain ancient redwoods the frosty air that is 20 degrees below that 10 miles east of here is notable; especially when riding. I have the entirity of Montgomery Woods State Park to myself even though it is the weekend, and I make a pleasant morning of it. I climb the first steep hill, leaving my bicycle behind, and after a short walk I reach the grove, a thin expanse marking one of the last virgin redwood forests in the region. Trees dwarfing me, [View Full Entry]

This past Sunday evening the streets of Waikiki looked more like the streets of Kyoto, Seoul, Naha or Hong Kong as the 28th Annual Pan-Pacific Parade took place. The event is a Japan sponsored function to promote friendship, culture exchange and fun between Japan and the Local cultures. The previous morning, there was another parade through Downtown and Waikiki honoring King Kamehameha (See Previous Journal). One would think it’ll be more sensible to have spread these events, let’s say at least a week or 2 apart, but hey, I just live here. Well, I’m not complaining as I [View Full Entry]

We are finally home after 9 months of roaming the world. Our last few days of the trip we spent golfing, sunning and zipping the lines in Costa Rica -- what a blast --but the real magic came when we stepped off the plane in Denver. How to explain what that felt like? Like comfort and happiness and family, all rolled into one. It sounds so cliche, I'm sorry, but there is no place like home and when I say home, I mean our home here in Colorado, but I also mean the United States of America. It’s never raises more than a few feet above the water. It’s straight as an arrow. The fact still remains; Pontchartrain Causeway is the longest bridge in the world. 25 miles of bridge between Metairie and Mandeville in Louisiana. One might think that this would be an interesting ride. The fact is, it’s probably hard to find a less interesting ride. Look to your left, there is water a few feet down. Look to your right, there’s water a few feet down. Look in front of you, there’s probably a car. It seems unlikely that anyone would drive off the bridge [View Full Entry]

Saturday morning, October 2, 1999, I drove my RX-7 from Olympia to Fife to pickup a rental 28 foot Class C RV from a rental company. Leaving the Mazda at the rental place, I drove the big buggy back home to pack it for our trip around the Olympic Peninsula. Our toy poodle, Shadow, is 10 months old now and became excited when he saw the RV in the driveway. We took him on our mosey down the Oregon Coast in May, and when he saw the buggy, he knew that it was a special time. As soon as we opened [View Full Entry]
