Little Miami Scenic Trail (Xenia to Urbana)
The Little Miami Scenic River Trail in South Western Ohio runs approximately 100 miles (160 km) from Newton in the South to Urbana
in the North. Dayton
, to the west, is the closest large city. At various times the Little Miami Scenic Trail may have a “local name. We have only biked small portions of this trail north of Xenia
(which is the hub of trails in this area)
The Simon Kenton trail
runs from downtown Springfield
Ohio, north to Urbana 18 miles ( 29 km)
There are a number of spurs that branch off to local areas.
You can use city streets in Springfield to connect to the Little Miami Scenic Trail to the south.
The Simon Kenton Trail
(known locally as SKT
) is flat, paved and a combination of open and shaded areas. The open areas are generally next to corn or soya bean fields.
There are a number of staging areas, most with parking and porta potty but there is no water
on the trail.
A good staging area is on County Line Road,
a few miles north of Springfield
. Exit highway 68 at county line road and go east a few hundred metres. There is a parking lot, covered area, porta potties and pop machines. Urbana is about 7 miles (about 11 km) north and Springfield Villa Road staging
area is about 3 miles south.
There are staging areas
at the Urbana Station in Urbana, Route 55, Woodburn Road, County Line Road, and Villa Road in Springfield.
There are many places
to eat in Urbana. A popular (and busy) place is the Farmer’s Daughter family restaurant
about 300 metres west of the Urbana Station (with free wifi)
The Little Miami Scenic River Trail is not complete through Springfield and requires the use of city streets for about 4 miles and the use of the Buck Creek Trail
to Buck Creek State Park
A better plan is to head south to Yelllow Springs or Xenia
both of which have staging areas. Xenia is the centre of 4 trails radiating out from it.
Riding from Yellow Springs to Xenia
(10 miles) is mostly downhill and about 70% in shade. There are a few benches but no porta potties or water. The last mile or so is on city streets (Detroit Avenue) and goes by a nice park as well as fast food restaurants AND a place for ice cream! Xenia station has a HUGE parking lot with washrooms and water and maps
. From Xenia you can bike in 4 different directions.
