Tonight is the Captain’s Farewell Party before dinner and our favorite shipboard entertainment, Krew Kapers. After a day of packing suitcases as Mariner sails towards Los Angeles and home, we’re ready for some fun.
Roy, our favorite waiter, will be singing the final solo. “We’ll be sitting near the front on the left-hand side,” Alan tells him at breakfast.
When Roy enters the stage at the beginning of the show, he spots us immediately and the waving begins. The crew does a fantastic job of dancing, lip-synching and actual singing. There’s not an empty seat in the theatre as passengers clap and yell when they recognize a favorite crewmember.
Alan, Kathryn and I feel like proud parents when Roy begins the last number, “The Impossible Dream.” The lights dim, he steps to the front of the stage in a bright spotlight and begins to sing. The crowd rises to their feet in a standing ovation when he ends his solo. We have tears in our eyes and clap until our hands hurt.
The crew is introduced and the clapping continues until the last crewmember has left the theatre. Earlier in the cruise, Capt. Guillou paraphrased a toast
that sticks in my mind. He said, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a present.” I certainly feel that way about the time and effort the crew put into this show. They’ve given us
a gift tonight - the gift of their time and talents.
We follow the crowd into Compass Rose. Our favorite table in Roy’s section is already waiting for us. Passengers complement him as the men slap his back and the women give him hugs. Roy beams and offers extra enthusiastic service during our last dinner.
When we finish our meal, we hurry to the show by the PGT singers and dancers. “Here, There and Everywhere” is a Broadway style tribute to the Beatles. The high-energy performance ends our cruise on an upbeat note.
Postscript:
The cruise ended with Kathryn arriving home healthy and safe. Alan and I were successful bodyguards and for now, we are off-duty.
Check back soon for the next installment. You never know when our travel feet will begin to itch again!

Thanks so much for sharing your cruises with all of us who can't be doing these wonderful things for one reason or another. Personally, my time is coming! I haven't been on a ship since I was single. Six weeks onboard and I thought I died and went to heaven! Then I came back home after being away for more than 3 years (Oz, NZ, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore etc etc) got married, had kids, now grandkids and we're empty nesters, so the time is near!! Of course, the cruise won't be the same as when I was 20 or 21!
Anyway, the cruising is what caught my eye and I've been reading your blogs and enjoying them very much, I must say. I've bookmarked your last entry and check every so often to see if you are off to somewhere else! Are your feet getting itchy again?? Hope so! Take care and all the best to you and your husband.
