Much better day! Left Sudbury at about 10:30am. Got off exit quickly to get gas…Drove for miles, no gas. Asked for directions…still no gas. Low fuel light on in the car...Started the Rosary. Finally found a “gas bar” in White Fish. Stopped in Massey. Red truck with unsavory characters… thought they were following us…well actually only I did! Glimpses of Lake Huron and Superior as we moved along.…people are right; they do look like the ocean.
Back into USA at Sault Ste Marie. Border guard very funny. Called us hippies. Asked if we had any alcohol…Donna and I shaking in our boots (you’d think we were transporting heroin). Bill calmly answered “no”. That was a lie!!!! Had lunch in a rest area…welcome to Michigan.. lovely spot. Drove on through Michigan..Back roads, lovely country.
Stopped at a Motel (Clarks) in Strongs Corner on the upper peninsula; The “black bear capital of Michigan”. Quaint place, simple clean. The owner didn’t take a credit card. “pay me in the morning”. Outside having drinks when Donna and Bill spotted a baby bald eagle in a nest!! What excitement. Bill got out the telescope…They’ll have to tell you the rest. Cheese and crackers for supper…we’re over budget!
Today’s Road Lesson: There’s no place like home.
