So I have given up hope that we will actually get the blog caught up with where we currently are. After leaving the Northeast Entrance of Yellowstone on Wed. Sept. 3rd we took Highway 296 up into Montana for a bit and then south to 120 (Chief Joseph Scenic Highway) into Cody, Wyoming. We arrived around 9pm and immediately searched for a campsite. Not knowing the area, we took the first one we could find. It happened to be an RV Park, but the owner was nice and let us use a site to sleep in our car at a reduced [View Full Entry]

It poured rain all night, and we woke up to near freezing temperatures. It is grey and drizzling, but we dress in layers and venture out anyway. Elk were grazing right in front of the Mammoth Hot Springs hotel. Whee the bull was, rangers had the road blocked off so people couldn't get too close. Fall is their mating season, making them agressive and more likely to charge your car. We buy a hot drink to warm our hands, make a sandwich, and move on. Mammoth Hot Springs is one of the park's most active hydro-thermal areas. A huge underground magma [View Full Entry]

As we had already come a long way from our starting point back at Grant Village campground, and we still had a lot left to see that we hadn't gotten to, we opted to stay Tuesday night at another place, closer to the sights that we wanted to see the next day: Canyon Campground. We had originally planned to leave Wednesday 09/03, but since there were still so many sights left, we adjusted our plans to get to see them, since we were already here and might not get back for awhile. Tuesday night we also got to attend another ranger [View Full Entry]

Town Square in Jackson, Wyoming. For being such a cold place there is a suprising lack of coffee/chai shops.
It snowed! That's right, September 1st and it was snowing. We knew it was gonna be cold just by watching the temperature gauge in the car drop as we climbed in elevation, but never planned for snow. After the few hours sleep at the rest stop, we took Hwy 26/191 through Jackson, Wyoming and the Grand Tetons. I could move to Jackson in a second, if it weren't so dang cold! It is an adorable town, with a very clean and friendly downtown. We stopped for breakfast and walked around the very "western" town square. In every store I found ways [View Full Entry]

Armed with some information from the internet, maps and books from CAA, and reservations for accommodations based on reviews from Trip Advisor - with best and cheapest being the criteria, we are almost ready to go. Weather forcasts say expect daytime highs in the teens (celsius - translates to the 60's F), with night time lows close to freezing. Brrr! As if summers aren't short enough as it is! We are also prepared for some thundershowers - so we pack pretty much everything in the closet. They say planning is half the fun. (Who are THEY anyway?) [View Full Entry]

We stayed in the town of Jackson, just south of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. It was a great little town, very much set-up for the tourist and we could easily imagine it covered in snow in the peak of the ski season. We had an awesome drive in, coming up and over the mountains, from Teton Pass, with a great view of the town from the top. We didn't have a great deal of time in the town, as we spent most of it in Grand Teton National Park, but we got some time in the evening to look [View Full Entry]

Old Faithful, one time again!

The first portion of the pictures were taken on the way to Wyoming; I've never taken pictures before of the drive from Minnesota to Colorado, so I decided that it was time. Mom, John and I drove to Colorado to see our family (lots of family!) We made a detour and spent a couple of days in Yellowstone National Park. It was John's and my first time there; I can see why so many people travel from so far away to see it - it is amazing. As my mom says, it shows that the earth is indeed alive. Hi everyone sorry for the delay in updating the blog, but there was no service in Yellowstone. Before we left SD we went to and Wildlife Safari drive in a a place called Bear Country and is was very cool and the elk started to run right at us as we pulled in and it was a little scary. There were also wolves just walking around the vehicles with there cubs and there was a very large collection of bears, that Nick would not let me put my window down to take pictures and so I did anyways...(he forgot that he [View Full Entry]

Jim and I continued to have a great time during our last few days at Yellowstone. One day we stopped off at Daisy Geyser. It's a powerful erruption that happens only about every 3 hours. To get to Daisy, Jim wanted to walk a 1 mile path that would avoid the Old Faithful traffic. At first I was scared. One mile is not a long way, but what if there were bears? It looked like a trail that wasn't used very much. I just didn't feel comfortable. We were about to turn around when a group of hikers started to walk [View Full Entry]
