Wow, what a day, what a day, it felt like the day and road would never end. We pulled out of Cody, Wy. at 10:00 am and took a “short cut” (from Amy’s Badin friend) and ended in the small town of population…….and I am not lying 100, salute. After getting back to the “highway” we started to go up hill, I should say up mountain. The Big Horn Mountains, top out at 13,000 plus feet, I think we were driving at 10,000 feet. It took us about 2 hours to get through the Big Horn Mountain average speed about 25-30 miles per hour. Then we had to go down the mountains….I didn’t need to worry about having enough power to move my family, I was now worried about having enough braking power. Apparently shifting down ... read more

Devils Tower National Landmark We arrived here about 4pm, after settig up the trailer went up to the tower. We ate a picnic lunch that Misti made and then hiked around the tower. Laurel was pushed in her stroller and Adam hiked the whole way by himself. Quite a feat for a five year old in 100F temperatures. We all were impressed by devils tower, but Adam almost seemed drawn to it. The night ended with a thunderstorm, very cool to see with Devils tower light up by the lightning.... read more

We sure do love Montana. We hate to leave, it's got to be one of our favorite states. The Wyoming plains are a lot like Montana's, but now we're seeing buttes on our left and the Bighorn Mountains on our right as we near Sheridan. Past Sheridan it varies between green and dry all the way to Moorcroft, where we turn north to Devil's Tower Natl Monument. Devil's Tower is very impressive standing up all alone, both close up and from a distance. I asked a park ranger what the yellow flowers are that we see covering hillsides all through Wyoming and eastern Montana. He said they were Leafy Spurge, a non-native, invasive plant that is choking out the natural grasslands. Hmm... they don't seem so pretty anymore. From Devil's Tower we drove east on ... read more

Greetings from Devil's Tower. We made it here about 5:00 last night and got a quick hike in around the base of the tower. It is amazing! We camped in site of the tower last night next to another family in a VW camper. They're driving from Oregon to Cape Cod and then back - we thought we had a long drive! We have another 350 miles in the van this morning to our friends' home in Powell, WY. Hope to see a dinosaur attraction on the way. See you later.... read more

Thursday, June 5, 2008 we departed Deadwood, South Dakota and arrived at Devil's Tower, Wyoming, which was proclaimed by President Theodore Roosevelt as America's first national monument on September 24, 1906 and rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River (named by French fur trappers in the 1700s and means "pretty fork river"). The river carved most of the landscape that exposed Devil's Tower. The present day name of the Tower was named by Colonel Richard Dodge in 1875 when he led an expedition sent to confirm reports of gold being discovered in the Black Hills and to survey the area. Each tribe living in this area had a legend connected with the Tower which they named Bear Lodge, here is the legend of the Lakota Sioux -- it is quite long but here is a ... read more

We slept in a little today, probably due to the massive night last night. We headed for the visitor’s centre for breakfast and to get some souvenirs we wanted. On the way we stopped in the middle of the road because a small herd of buffalo were crossing. It was quite a sight and took a while as well but worth the wait. We shortly arrived at the visitor’s centre and Dave and Marcia went to get breakfast for some of us, the rest of us went looking around the store. I had a good look around and tried some clothes on and bought a warm jumper and a long sleeve top. Went back to Dave and Marcia and they were still waiting for breakfast. When they finally got it they had to queue in another ... read more
