A beautiful day sent us on a road trip in search of some wine and beer. We begged a couple of friends to go with us, packed up and headed out. Our first stop was Staller Estate Vineyard and Winery W8896 County Hwy A in Delavan Wisconsin. (technically, just south of Richmond, Wisconsin). This is a cute little mom and pop operation that is fairly new to the winery business. Drive around the not-in-operation barn for a small parking area and you will see the retail shop and gazebo, still brand spankin' new. A few of the grape vines are nearby. They offer wine tasting for you to choose a couple of favorites. Another bonus, check out the changing Wisconsin cheese offerings. You can also order a "picnic platter" made up for you, including your cheese ... read more

I have about a week before i leave for Ghana for four months. Time has never felt like such an odd concept more than it does now. I want to fast forward time to the moment i step on African soil. I want to pause time and keep things the way they are right now. To keep savoring the moments i have with loved ones. To keep this giant mysterious question mark lurking in the dark longer. And then there are times when i want to skip time; skip time to the moment i return, with my great adventure under my belt, return a more enlightened person and return to the life and lives i left behind. But i cannot do any of those things. I must simply keep living; keep moving at time's steady pace. ... read more

It has been almost a week since I returned to the Midwest after 3 years living and working in London. It hasn't been long, but already it seems like ages ago I was wandering around Covent Garden, Shoreditch, Holborn, the West End, frantically squeezing all my worldly possesions into impossibly small suitcases. The process of sifting thru your entire contemporary life, deciding what stays and what goes, really does your head in. You flash back to all the other times you've done it before; do you keep the shirt you bought in Morocco all those years ago that you've never worn, but which is a beautifully crafted reminder of those 3 days in Tangiers so many years ago...? Nope, that one went to Oxfam. You've got to be a bit brutal in the end. Here I ... read more

I've been testing Aerobeds, guest bedrooms, and the hospitality of friends and family across the US. Sarah and her husband Matt put me up in Elgin, Illinois. Sarah, a new mom to Ava, just over 4 months, amazed me by staying up until 1:30 AM. We discussed eccentricities of our parents and wondered what our futures hold for similar habits. As a kid I was accustomed to hopping out of the car to grab abandoned bungee cords along the road that my dad would spot while driving. He accrued quite the collection. Close friends of mine could probably list my strange hang-ups... test yourselves by listing them in your head now (pens, frames, paper-creasing... go ahead, add to the list). At Sarah and Matt's house I bedded down in the company of the friendly critters pictured ... read more

Pictured in approximately 1989 I was a freshman in high school having a sleepover at my friend Sara's house. To my side is my friend Maggie. A few weeks ago I was camped on that same red bed in LaCrosse, WI. This time, Sara's 5 year old son Ethan had to give up his room for the week. He very generously did. Though the room was missing the very trendy red and black color combo and Christmas lights woven through the bed frame, I enjoyed what Ethan had done with the place. His door was a perfect spot to display some stickers, haphazardly placed. He also used Scotch tape to prominently display a penny. My personal favorite, and sure to tug at any mom's heartstrings, was a small one inch by one inch proof of Sara ... read more

What happened here last night? As I woke this morning and entered the kitchen I began scanning for evidence. My things were strewn about, an atlas open to a map of South America, my credit card haphazardly stuffed into my wallet, my calendar open to August, the computer fan humming. Is it possible? Could I have purchased an airline ticket in my sleep? After checking my email inbox it was confirmed, not the sleep-purchasing, just that I now owned a ticket to Chile. And then the fuzz started to wear away. Thoughts from the early morning. Who says 2 A.M. is an illogical time to buy a life-changing airline ticket? Life-changing airline tickets are very expensive and best bought at 2 A.M. when the brain cannot compute the damage being done to the savings account. Spurred ... read more

As my departure deadline approached I realized I had a problem. My car was packed to the gills and the inside of my house looked like I had moved nothing. That was my first estimation error. I would need more space to transport my stuff. It took my friend Sara only a few minutes to convince me that I should postpone my departure and look into renting a U-Haul trailer. The next morning I bought the necessary equipment for my car hitch and went to U-Haul to pick up the trailer. I tried to look at the experience as a training in patience as I waited and watched the U-Haul guy hook up the wiring and hitch to my car. I had to lead him to the correct wrenches and point out where he might place ... read more
