Geo: 37.9722, -81.1489We drove out from Richmond the night before our rafting trip so we'd be good and rested for our adventure. The campground was pretty crowded, but the facilities were good. I'm not sure why the camp areas needed to be so close together given that land can't be that expensive there. It was raining when we arrived. The forecast indicated that it would probably get worse rather than better, so we put up the tent in the rain: never fun. The kids stayed dry in the car. Luckily, we had already decided to eat out for the evening, so we did not need to cook in the rain. We did some research ahead of time and settled on Pies & Pints in nearby Fayetteville for dinner (piesandpints.net). They have a large selection of draft beers ... read more

Tuesday June 21 Just crossed over the Appalachians in Virginia and West Virginia and just kept on going till I got East of Lexington, Kentucky. I made several stops along the way to rest a bit and stretch my legs.It has been a long day. I left at 11:00 out of Wythville, Virginia and stopped at about 8 PM. I ran into several thunderstorms off and on but found a place to stop and wait them out. It is so nice to have the luxury of time. The weather has been cool and the plants lush and green but I am starting to come to the hot weather again.....sigh. Drove 340 miles today, a lot of them in the mountains. Sure has been pretty.... read more

Thursday June 16 In Hagerstown , Maryland. Had intended to go to Antietam today but got a late start out of Winchester and after touring Harpers Ferry battlefield I took "Shortcut" and wandered all over the Maryland countryside but could not find the Antietam Battlefield. I think the problem is they just post signs for "Sharpsburg" which is what the town is called that is next to it. The lady here at the Motel 6 in Hagerstown told me to go on 70 East from here and take the Sharpsburg exit off I 70. So tomorrow I will head for that. It has been delightfully cool and downright nice all this week. Sure enjoying it. The Harpers Ferry battlefield was pretty interesting. Lee was proceding with his invasion of the North into Maryland but could not ... read more

Most of the people in my sleeping car were also bound for Pittsburgh, so the sleeping-car attendant simply banged on our doors to wake us up, calling, "35 minutes to Pittsburgh!" I thought it seemed a bit early, and it was; the train was ahead of schedule. That was only appropriate, I suppose, considering how very late it had been when I set out. I dressed and packed my suitcase quickly enough, and then spent all the rest of the time looking frantically for my CozyWinters scarf. Eventually -- but not before I had searched every inch of the roomette and gone to check the restroom and shower room -- I found it in my jacket pocket. I stepped off the train into predawn darkness, and there at the station door was Jim. He took my ... read more

Well arrived in the US, friday was a working day for my brother and family, so we opted for a small outing. The weather was wonderful just above zero and clear skies. Had thought about showing the White House to the children, but I had another idea to visit Harpers Ferry, 1½ hours away from Baltimore. Arriving, we could see it was a perfect time to visit - the parking lot had space for a thousand cars, and there were maybe a couple of other cars beside ours. A small shuttle drives along the Shenandoa river down to lower Harpers Ferry. The historic site is a nice place with interesting history and many small museums dedicated to persons or civil war subjects. A couple of places were open, like a small pub/restaurant where we had lunch. ... read more

Introduction Every year, from late November to early March, I must travel south for the winter. If I fail to drag myself away from the comforts of home -- 45 West Virginia acres euphemistically described as "rolling," some of which are so steep that I, with my bad knee, have literally never been able to set foot on them -- I am reminded of my need to go by a reactivation of my chronic bronchitis. If I do not go -- and this actually happened for five years running before I began my annual migration -- the bronchitis becomes pneumonia by February. Normally, I spend my enforced exile in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. But last year was unusually cold in Myrtle Beach -- snow even fell, and stuck, on the beach itself. And I thought of ... read more

...and enjoying myself! I have been at my sisters house since Tuesday and it's been amazing spending time with my family! As I told you in my previous letter, I've been cruising around on Ken's bike and stopped by Coopers rock to look at the wonderful nature they have here! Last Thursday, I went to Kennywood amusement park with Ken&Hannah and had a blast! We did tons of rides, see my pictures below! Went inside the haunted house to shoot at ghosts and I won the grand prize: to spend the rest of my eternity with the main ghost of the mansion! mohahahahah I can't wait, sounds like fun :D Ken&Hannah went on this super-fast monster ride, going up side down and God knows what, I am kinda glad I decided to stay on the ground ... read more

I kinda occupied him from thursday - sunday, sorry about that :) drinking beer, hanging out, at the drive in,goofing around and stuff. See pictures - I got zhe proof :D Stayed at "Days Inn", no complaints! Smoking room, pool right outside my window, free parking, free wifi... will most def be back the next time! Didn't really get to see a whole lot of Wichita, except for the shops I blew alot of money in - so I'll do the whole tourist thing next time :) However, I did see Old Town, or ... read more

Day 19 St. Louis to Charleston, WV It was hard to say good-bye but after lots of visiting, yummy french toast, and re-packing of the van we headed out. 8 hours of straight driving....no side trips or strange sightings...wow...we must be getting tired! Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and finally West Virginia - a five state day. Turns out, we were in for a bit of fun in wild and wonderful West Virginia. Our hotel was the host hotel for the annual Oakland Pontiac car club conference. We had live music right outside the hotel’s front door, and about a mile of Pontiac cars from circa 1930’s thru 2010. We strolled along the river looking at cars watching the sun go down. We wandered off the river road and found a nice place to get dinner and ... read more

Friday, May 21 One of the pleasures of road trips is the excitement of a find that you didn’t expect. Our traipse through AP US History has had us trying to recall so much that we had forgotten - education is wasted on the young - but many of the places and names certainly did ring some familiar bells. But our real find today was a new one - Montpelier, the home of James Madison, outside Charlottesville. We started out Friday morning meandering along a country road lined with the famous Virginia horse farms on our way northeast of Charlottesville - absolutely gorgeous country. Montpelier was the family home of the Madison family - he was born there and died there - and clearly shows how the Virginia aristocracy lived two hundred+ years ago. Until 25 ... read more
