Apparently the bikes needed a wheel alignment. They kept pulling to the south. So right turn Clyde. We are going to make a real effort to head west. No, really we are this time. We are so far south that I am starting to have cravings for bourbon, what ever that is. We are leaving Charlottesville Virginia this morning. Weather has settled down,(no cows flying past) but the skies are very dark. Lets see how far we can make it and stay dry. After two hours of high speed freeways its time to settle in on a promising slower "Highway 60". This is a 2 lane route that stretches as far as Arizona. What a pleasant surprise. The road twists and turns with switchbacks and hairpin corners that make it hard to make time but are ... read more

We spent our last evening in Washington walking around the monuments and the white house , of a night all the Monuments are lit up and look really good , it was packed with people and school's and we managed to get some really nice pictures. Washington's been really enjoyable city with so much to do, I would say you could come back two or three times and still not see all their is to see here. One of the good things about Washington is that pretty much everything is free :) which is a bonus for us. So today we are off to Harpers ferry, West Virginia its a small place just an hour or so out side DC and its known for its hiking and civil war. We got the train from Washington to ... read more

DAY 17: MAY 8, 2013 West Virginia is designed to be traveled north to south; east to west it is bitch kitty. The eastern part of the state is far more scenic. I have stopped tonight after a drive of 220.4 miles at the Greenbrier Lodge in Marlinville, WV. It is slap on the bank of the Greenbrier River and the river is at an alarmingly high stage. Bill would like it here if we don’t all topple over in our sleep and drown in muddy water. They have good eats downstairs and there is a four piece hillbilly string band keeping things lively. I had a dish of their “West Virginia Original” for supper. It was grilled kielbasa, potatoes, onions, green peppers and mushrooms. I hope to survive long enough to cook it ... read more

DAY 16: MAY 7, 2013 This morning I hiked up the steep trail to the Cumberland Gap Saddle. It is only a distance of 0.6 miles, but it almost killed me. The round trip was 1.2 miles. Almost exactly the same distance as the Kentucky Derby. It took me far longer than 2 minutes though. I don’t understand it. I have been eating plenty of oats. This evening I have come to roost at the Candlewood place in Logan, West Virginia after a drive of 248.4 miles. It is the only motel here, but it is the nicest one I have stayed in. Kevin will be pleased that it has child-protected electric outlets. I can’t figure out how they work of course. Cumberland Gap Daniel Boone found his way into Kentucky through ... read more

Sunday dawned with bright sun and a touch of warmth. It was going to be a beautiful day to be married. We had the rehearsal behind us, many family members and friends had arrived the day before and come to the house, and the groomsmen and Kris had spent the night away and were awaiting my call to come back and get changed. First the hairdressers came and proceeded to do Kim and Autumn's hair. We were staying in the RV next to the house to be out of the way, but one step in and you knew what was transpiring....spray, goo, blow dryers, smell.....yep, hair getting done. Once hair was set and ladies dressed, Kim, Autumn, and Kris's mother left for the Purple Iris. That gave Trish and me a chance to take a shower ... read more

We un-winterized the RV and had our mechanic do some work a few weeks ago. It needed new turn signals in the front (turns out you can't just change a bulb), new air suspension bags in the front, and a general tune up. Ended up with new brakes and oil change and tuneup on the generator. Yow! Once home, we cleaned inside and out and then stocked up with food and supplies and clothes. First big trip of the year is to Martinsburg, WV for our daughter's wedding. We left Friday morning early and managed to get in late the same day. We had a hold-up in Salem, VA with some sort of problem on I-81, so had to go through town for a bit. That's OK, found gas for $3.07. Once in at Kim's, we ... read more

Highway 219---2012 Trip to Southern Ontario and Upper State New York with all the States in between When we came home from our trip out west, we noted a Technical Roadtrek Rally listed in the Roadtrek Newsletter was being held at a resort near Kitchener, Ontario. Since, 1) our warranty on the Roadtrek was to expire soon at 36,000 miles, and 2) there are no Roadtrek dealers near where we live, and 3) we needed to get some repair work done, and 4) there was still a lot to learn about our RV, we signed up for the Rally. Neither Valerie nor I had spent time in western New York State so, after getting Rosie II taken care of, we planned to spend time seeing Niagara Falls, the Erie Canal, Lake Ontario, and the Finger Lakes ... read more

We picked up the Rv at the Rental agency, brought it home and almost immediately began to load it with essentials in anticipation of our "take off". As it turns out we decided not to take a nap but rather, to push forward and ultimately left all "known" society and took to the open road. We were not too far down 128 when the rain came down in torrents, hindering visibility and, yes increased the potential for accidents, which, surprise! happened. As if it were not enough a strange yellow wrench icon suddenly appeared on the dashboard of this brand new unit. As luck would have it, when we tried calling the number we were advised to contact in case of trouble, both of our cell phones stopped working. We pulled into a gas station closeby ... read more

Hello Again (finally!) ~ I'm sitting here studying the map I have for West Virginia so I can report about the route we took from Virginia into W. Virginia, for those who might care (since there are others besides our friends & family who may wish to glean some travel info from this post). This leg of our journey was at the end of April last year which was a beautiful time to travel in W. Virginia. I'm still catching up on blogging for last year's trip... and some of you may be thinking "why bother now"? Well, it's a fair question, & there may come a point (very soon) in which I decide I must let it go & simply move on. I have not crossed that threshold yet (& probably won't with only Pennsylvania ... read more
