Blogs from Yakima, Washington, United States, North America
We've been planning this voyage for a long time. A trip has been in our cruising dreams since we started boating the San Juans and began slowly working our way up the Inside Passage. Last year we ventured up to Shearwater, BC, which by my reckoning is halfway to Glacier Bay. Sunday (5/13) we will leave our berth in Lake Union and began a 3-month cruise with family and friends joining us at various ports to share our journey. I hope to use these entries as a way to share with friends and family some of our experiences as well as keep you informed as to our whereabouts. Previous attempts to blog have been frustrated by the scarcity and slowness of internet connections in remote areas and even this year there will be many days of ... read more
Sunday September 27, 2009 “Let’s head for the barn? We got the Palouse Falls in our pocket. I’m ready for some rain; let’s go home.” So, we saddled up this morning and began a two day sprint to the home barn. We fueled up in Dayton, WA; as fine a little laid out town as you might want to see in eastern Washington. Basically, we are backtracking the route we took five years ago when we visited Jackson Hole and Yellowstone with our Hi-Ho Quicksilver in tow behind the Subi Forester. The biggest change we see are the electricity generating windmill farms on the high ridges along Hwy 12 between Dayton and Walla Walla. When I hear “Walla Walla,” I think about sweet onions. Between the tri cities (Pasco, Richland and Kennewick) and Yakima is Washington ... read more
Olympic National Park to Yakima- July 5th
Published: July 7th 2009North America » United States » Washington » YakimaLeft Port Townsend in the morning and swept around the west side of the Olympic Peninsula. Stopped at the Hoh Rain Forest. Walked both of the trails there, and kept going around the peninsula. Stopped at one of the Olympic National Park beach areas for a little stroll on the beach. Kept circling around the peninsula until traffic slowed to a near standstill where the peninsula connects with the mainland. Everyone was coming back home from the area after the 4th of July weekend, and it took me 45 minutes to go 2.5 miles. After I got passed the jam, I continued driving east and stopped in Yakima, WA. I left Yakima today and stopped in Spokane, WA for the night. On to Glacier National Park tomorrow.... read more
Had a layover in Yakima, Washington a few days ago so took MaryAnne along for the ride. She's been staying with me since the accident in Nebraska totaled her jeep and sidelined her Sacramento plans, so a short trip away to clear her head was a good idea. As you might guess, there's not much to do in Yakima when the weather is cold, but I had a really fun crew and we discovered happy hour in the bar attached to our hotel. After several rounds of pool (boys against the girls, two worst v. the two best, good and bad v. good and bad) we ordered every appetizer they offered and were only able to finish about half of it! Everything is half off during happy hour and so we couldn't resist trying everything though ... read more
We intended to return to Seattle today via Mount Rainier. Crossing the Hood River Bridge and Columbia River to Washington we headed for Trout Lake on the 141. There are some lovely views of Mount Hood and Mount Adams on this road. North of Trout Lake the road system was not too clear so we stopped at a Ranger Station and surprised to find from a wonderful ranger that the road we were seeking was washed away last November by the same floods that did so much damaged near Mount Hood. She advised us to go via Mount St Helens but that returning to Seattle that way might have serious delays from heavy traffic. She mapped out a scenic route via Glenwood and Yakima which we followed. It’s sparsely populated around here, offering some great views ... read more
