Walking from downtown or Belltown to the International District is both great exercise, and a treasure hunt. Our destination is the famous Asian supermarket, Uwajimaya. It is probably my favorite place to visit in Seattle, more so than EMP (now called MoPop), Pike Market, the flagship Nordstrom store, or our friends' Michael and Tanya's boutique. Written some time in the past: Before you turn away in disgust at the title of my email, please keep reading a little more. After all, wedgie could be a wedge of lettuce, or a great piece of pie. And "waji" is the cute nickname for the most famous Pacific northwest area super duper market, called Uwajimaya. Easy for you to say? The famous Uwajimaya is a high quality Asian supermarket with gift shop, and Japanese bookstore, all under one roof. ... read more

So, I have crossed our great country twice now on the rails. My first trip, the California Zephyr, began in Chicago, and ended in the Bay Area. My second trip, to the last Niners Super Bowl in New Orleans was the Sunset Limited, from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Today, I am departing Seattle on the Empire Builder, arriving in Chicago in three days. I will fly up to Seattle this morning, spend the day visiting friends, and board the Empire Builder at 4:40pm. The train leaves Seattle's Union Station, not far from the Sound Transit Light Rail. It ends in 46 hours at Union Station in Chicago at 4pm, September 1. And I hear the Giants are in town. And I have never been to a Giants game at Wrigley. You think I might find ... read more

This 2010 series was originally featured on the World is Round (WIR) photo-sharing site which went down last year, It is now defunct & all of photo journals & articles on that site are lost. My sister from Langley BC & I love Seattle (and Tacoma & Bellingham) & have visited several times. This visit was the most extensive so this series will feature several repeat photos from that visit with shorter captions. The multiethnic neighborhood, which consists mainly of people who are of Chinese, Japanese, and Filipino ethnicity, also has significant populations of people who are of Vietnamese, Korean, Thai, Laotian, Cambodian, and Pacific Islander descent, as well as other communities. The Vietnamese enclave is east of Highway 5. ... read more

Monday 09/07/12 – Our first night sleeping on the open deck of the ferry was great! It was an eerie morning as the passage was blanketed in fog which made the whole experience very unusual. One of the other passengers sleeping on deck had her dog with her for the night, a great big black husky that was really well behaved. Canada and Alaska are so dog friendly, everywhere you go people have dogs, even many shop owners have their dogs in the store with them. They are all so well behaved; I guess it’s due to the constant exposure to other dogs. The day was spent reading and relaxing on the ferry whilst keeping an eye out for the many eagles, sea lions, humpback whales and orcas that were cruising along the passage. We treated ... read more

So, woke in the morning about 7 am - and headed for Pike Market in downtown Seattle for a Piroshky at the Piroshky Bakery - look it up on google if you are ever in seattle - great spot. I got a Bavarian Sausage Piroshky, Mark got a potato and cheese, and we tore em n half and devoured. Then, we walked through the rest of pike market, and saw plenty of ENORMOUS shrimp, GARGANTUAN crab legs, COLOSSAL donuts, and...itsy bitsy tiny donuts too. Spread this in with fresh flowers and chocolates and such and you start to get a feel for the Pike market. Unfortunately, nothing much else seemed to be open, so me and Mark bummed around and then went down to the pier where I took the video above, then hung out in ... read more
