Sara has already gone to pick up Blaze and bring him to the house before I got up. The parade is just a few blocks down the street. There was a misty rain starting but not enough to stop anything. Her friend, Rachael, came over with her horse, Mitzy, to get ready for the parade also. Sara bathed Blaze and braided his tail. They put flowers and ribbons in his tail and mane and painted his hooves. George and I left at 12 to get a good place to put our chairs and watch the parade. Being a small town, this was not a big parade. Mostly locals and their kids and such but it was still fun. The horses were last of course in the parade and Sara really stood out. She had Blaze rearing ... read more

If felt good to sleep in this AM. Sara was already up getting stuff ready for us to go ride. We headed over to the horses around 11 am. Sara's horse is Anastasia and I was riding Blaze that belongs to Sara's friend Ashley. The other horse in the pasture is Rocky, a paint. We rode a bit down the road but the traffic was horrible with all the extra people on the peninsula. Came back to the pasture and just rode around there some. Watched Sara put Anastasia through her paces. She really has learned a lot about horses in this past year. After we finished riding, Sara and I went to Full Circle Cafe for some lunch. It's right next to the Ocean Park Beach approach. We finally reached Geroge and Paulie who has ... read more

It rained overnight and was very cloudy this morning. We figured we'd better put on the rain gear then maybe it won't rain on us. Wrong! We started out at 8AM and got about a hour down the road when a misty rain started. This wasn't bad though as you could still see where you were going. Not like the frog-stragglers we get in Georgia. We stopped though so I could stuff Piper down my jacket in case the rain got heavy We only had 200 mi to cover and the clouds were trying to clear. By the time we arrived in Astoria, OR and before crossing the bridge, the sun had come out....still in the 50's though but nice. Drove up at Sara's around 1 PM. It was so good to see her. She has ... read more

Last week Bea asked me if we were getting excited about moving on, and I said no, not at all. By Monday that feeling had changed in both Bob and I. This last week everyone is talking about where they’re going next (Bea and Barney don’t have another project until January, and Rose and Ron aren’t going to do any more projects, because of Rose’s health) and we’re talking about routes, and what has to be done before Thursday, and we’re ready to be moving on! The rain makes it a little easier, I suppose, but I am going to miss being so close to the ocean. But I’m excited to see what’s next…what we’ll be seeing, and who we’ll be meeting. We’re going to a conference center in northern California, but our plans are to ... read more

I must have sounded very whiny about being homesick, because I got a lot of letters cheering me up! It wasn't one of those moods that engulfs you, just a shallow one that I waded around in for a couple days, and now I'm fine. It was wonderful to hear from so many people, and thank you thank you for your kind words about our blog. It's nice to know people enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it. Well, we are learning about Washington/Oregon rain, and it’s not rain like we’ve ever seen. The rain literally dumps from the sky. I’ve said before that the sky can go from sunny to cloudy in the blink of an eye, when it does that, the clouds may or may not have rain in them, and ... read more

It’s raining today, and is supposed to rain for the next five days. It started with the fine misty rain we’ve had here, but tonight it’s flat-out raining. We can hear it coming in sheets, but they’re big drops. Everyone is talking about winter setting in early, and so far I’ve been able to stop myself from telling them they don’t know winter! But that leads me to some other thoughts: I have had an unsettled feeling for the past several days…that feeling you get when you’ve left something unfinished. It might be because the weather is changing toward fall, which also means it’ll be changing to winter, right?! I think I’m getting the urge to pad my nest and settle in for the winter! If I were at home, I’d be taking out the winter ... read more

The men have the wainscoting up in the dining hall, and it is so beautiful. They’ll put three coats of varnish on it, all low luster. And then they’re going to build benches to put in it, and eventually, tables. It’s fun to look at the boards on the wall, and see the different patterns in the wood (most of it is pine, but some is spruce) and know that they came right of the camp property. Jess (lake camp director) said he has people asking if he will come clear the logs off their property, and he can have that for lumber. It’s certainly different being in a place that has more lumber than they can use at this time! This afternoon the men ran some logs through the saw mill, and then tomorrow ... read more

We had a very social weekend~~the camp directors here had a wedding for their oldest daughter, right here at the camp. It began at 2:00, and ended at 10:00 with fireworks! It was a beautiful ceremony, and we didn’t stay there the whole time~~another good thing about having your home with you! We did show up again for the fireworks on the beach. Sunday was the birthday party for the camp director of the lake camp. That’s a lot of hours of being nice, and I almost think it’s harder for me than Bob!! On another entirely different note, we found some slugs in the lawn that were as big as my thumb. I’m not kidding. Bob said they’re as big as the carp back home!! It had rained the night before, and that must bring ... read more

Today we watched cranberries being harvested. (Oregon is one of the largest producers of cranberries, and that’s the second industry on the peninsula, with tourism being first.) We went through the museum (and gift store~~there’s always a gift store!) and learned the processes, and then walked out to the field to see the growing stages, which was all very interesting, BUT we found a cranberry farm that was actually harvesting their crop. They’re ready about two weeks earlier this year than usual. It was fun to see the kids helping, and it all reminded me so much of the excitement of beet harvest. I’ll try to tell the story through the pictures…. ... read more
