TRAVEL DURING COVID In order to allay my daughter’s fears about my bringing home Covid from my trip to Mexico I followed suggested guidelines from the Covid Prevention Center while traveling; avoid crowds, wear a mask, and keep a safe distance apart. As an additional precaution when I returned to the United States, I decided to self-quarantine, camping alone for two weeks in a State Park. (The weather was so nice I actually stayed 21 days). I am a backpacker and have hiked in the Cascades in Washington State for almost thirty years. Usually, my trips are in the high country. Sometimes I hike with my daughter and sometimes with friends, but I often hike alone. This is however, a high-density camper area and I am rarely truly alone anymore. Someone is always passing me on ... read more

The event that we have been awaiting for over a year has finally arrived. Our German friends from Haigerloch have now joined us in Washington! After much planning, preparation, anticipation and building excitement, we were ready to welcome them into our homes. After months of emails and Skype chats, it felt as though we were welcoming lifelong friends. Our group slowly trickled in to the area outside of the "A" gates starting at about 10am. By 11, we were ready, en masse, excitedly waiving handmade signs and eagerly asking every departing passenger which city they were coming from, hoping beyond hope they would reply "Newark", thereby signaling our friends imminent arrival. Eventually one of our group exclaimed, "I see blue, there they are"! It was true, they had arrived. A tired but excited group emerged from ... read more

Hi Folks, It's been an amazing summer for everyone involved in this incredible exchange! I am pleased to announce that the photo sharing site is up and that I have added the first 231 pictures! On this site, you can download full size and original quality photos. In other words, much better than Facebook allowed us to post. Also, please consider uploading your own photos to share! Please make sure to pass the site along to our German hosts and encourage them to share any photos that they took while we were there. I will work on uploading more photos (I still have about 2,500 to go through), and perhaps we can add a bunch from the American leg of the exchange as well! Anyway, here is the site: https://edisonhaigerloch2014.shutterfly.com/ If you have any questions, please ... read more

It's been a few days since I've been able to post, but things are going swimmingly with the exchange! Of course, three days on a Heidi Herder schedule equals about 9 million cool things that bear mentioning on this blog, and they will be. This post is simply to pass along a couple of links. First, from Germany comes this article, attached as the picture on this page. Our Germans were profiled in their local paper, including a picture from their time in New York City! We are hosting celebrities everyone! Second, within minutes of arriving at school on their first day at Edison, Jutta Fais and Emily, we thrown live on the air on Edison's Monday Morning Show. The episode, cut down a bit for time, can be viewed here... Monday Morning Show More to ... read more

And we're off! Twenty-five anxious and excited host families met at the airport in eager anticipation of our guests arrival, welcome signs in hand and smiling wide. Our friends from Haigerloch, Germany have arrived in Washington for their two week visit! All of the preparation and planning is complete thanks to the leadership of our own Heidi Herder and we are ready to rock! After the blue clad Haigerloch crew had collected their baggage, we were off in separate directions (mostly north of course). Some took the opportunity to explore Seattle on this beautiful and mostly sunny day, a truly rare occasion here lately. The obvious first stop of Dicks Burgers was a popular one for many in order to partake in some uniquely Seattle artery clogging goodness! Pike Place Market, the Seattle Underground Tour, the ... read more

A lot has happened since we returned home from Germany. Some have left on other vacations, others have begun school sports, a lucky few have even had time to settle in and relax for a bit before the craziness of another academic year begins. Regardless of what we have done since returning to the states, the memories that we have of a great trip to Germany are alive and well within our minds. Those memories, along with the friendships that were forged, will live on forever! It's always fun to revisit times like these and there is no better way to do it than photographically. I have set up a site HERE where you can download all the pictures your heart desires. Even better, upload and share all of your photos with others! Simply sign up ... read more

As we prepare to depart in just a few short days, I thought I would provide some links and tips to help you all prepare. First, travel guru Rick Steves' packing list . Second, HERE is an interesting article published just yesterday in the Seattle Times about parents compounding homesickness by "tech hovering". Not that any of our groups parents would do this of course, but still an interesting read. Here is a site devoted to tracking flights. Follow us all the way to Hamburg via Flight Aware . The Airport code for Seattle is KSEA, Hamburg is HAM, Reykjavik is BIKF. If you would like to actually listen to the air traffic control tower feeds online, you can do so url=http://www... read more

We are under two weeks from departure! Here are some helpful tips and links in order to assisst you in your preparations. Take careful note of the checked and carry-on baggage restictions listed below! One of the most common problems (it actaully happened to me); make sure you don't wrap gifts for your exchange partner! They will be unwrapped and inspected, thereby making all the effort you spent wrapping said gift totally pointless! Also, don't expect to get any soda through security. They will confiscate even an unopened can or sealed bottle. You can buy it at the departure gates to carry on to the plane. Here are the requirements for Carry-On and Checked Baggage According to the Transportation Security Administration. More information can be found on their web site HERE More information can be found ... read more
