The bus is getting crowded because everyone is leaving town. That is the first line of a poem my mom wrote this spring during the height of the lockdown. We had just come through our own battles with the dreaded coronavirus, but unfortunately even though we had both now recovered everything around us was pretty much shut. The new normal was not normal. So we decided to plan on getting out of town some day in the distant future. I was very eager to see how the rest of the country was handling the pandemic and inhuman lockdowns. Were other states less fearful than the denizens of our little corner of the world were? Did other places look more normal than our New York? Also, for as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to travel ... read more

Since we arrived at the hotel late from our Cass Scenic Railroad train ride yesterday, we were both tired when we awoke this morning. We had originally planned on staying last night back in Luray and resuming our ride down Skyline Drive where we left off, but the late ending of the train ride had us stay in Harrisonburg some 40 miles away. So our first hour this morning was spent just getting back to Luray to pick up where we left off. It did give us the opportunity for that one last ride up and over the mountain on US-211E. It's about 400 miles from Luray to Asheville, NC on what starts out as Skyline Drive while it's in Shenandoah National Park and turns into Blue Ridge Parkway when it leaves. We decided to split ... read more

After getting my apartment all packed up and off to storage, we headed out for our first stop on the trip, Roanoke, VA. Roanoke was a stop based upon convenience and distance more than what there is to "say and do" in town. That said, Roanoke has a special small town vibe in the downtown area. We walked through some of the streets downtown enjoying the small fun stores, then headed to dinner at Jack Brown's Beer and Burgers. With specialty burgers named after characters like Danny Laruso and Greg Brady, as well as classic artists like Elvis, we knew we were up for an experience. My dad tried the Jalapeno Popper with cream cheese and pickled jalapenos and I had the Greg Brady with macaroni and cheese, American and cheddar blend cheese and BBQ potato ... read more

Complementary breakfast. What's not to like? The answer: most of it. The so-called most important meal of the day was compiled of stale bagels, solid scrambled eggs and these circular slabs of an unlabelled bacon-like substance that we were forced to call 'breakfast meat' in lack of a clear animal of origin. After an entertaining but uneventful morning of driving we began to get hungry. Out of the multiple barbecue joints, sandwich bars and other mouthwatering restaurants we passed around lunchtime, my brothers decided it was best to a eat at an establishment of outstanding individuality that is almost unheard of in England. Burger King. That grease drenched patty was neither worth the $7 I spent on it nor the following two hours spent trying to digest it. No wonder there's an obesity epidemic in the ... read more

Good Morning Everyone! This is my first of hopefully many blogs! I am currently sitting on the couch in Roanoke visiting with family and the cats. I really don't know what to write at this given time considering I have a "To Do List" that is increasing in length by the thought. But all I know is that I need to create this blog now in preparation for the upcoming days. It became real to me yesterday when I got my visa stamped that I am going. I AM MOVING TO COSTA RICA! (this is where you put in the HELL YES mixed in with the OH CRAP). Two years teaching at Country Day School in Escazu, San Jose, Costa Rica. Living abroad has been on my bucket list. I will live with the locals and ... read more

Well what can I say about Roanoke, errrrmmmmmm!!!!!! Not a lot really, the journey here was lovely about two and a half hours from Charlottesville, the trees are lovely at the moment, vibrant yellows, oranges, greens and deep reds. We passed by well manicured lawns with ornamental ponds, with a backdrop of rolling hills covered in autumn colours and behind that the blue ridge mountains. Paddocks with either horses or cows, neither of which I fancied riding thank you Mrs Player? ha ha can you see me on a horse!!! Wouldn't know which shoes to wear for that!!! People seem to use their front porches quite a lot here maybe we should adopt them in the UK then perhaps neighbours would actually speak to each other. The one good thing that they had in Roanoke at the ... read more

Today was an excellent first full day in Roanoke. We knew we were in for something with McAfee Knob on the itinerary, but I guess we didn't really know what was coming. After a good nights sleep and a hot hotel breakfast, we were off to the trailhead parking lot to get started on the 3.9 mile hike up to McAfee Knob. The drive was only about 20 minutes, there was plenty of parking and it was clear which way to go. We started up the trail with lots of energy and excitement and it just kept getting better. We saw our first Appalachian Trail shelter, a few campsites, and our first glimpses of the grand view ahead. But it wasn't until we reached the other side of the mountain ridge, nearning our destination that we ... read more

What a full and fun day today was. We did so much, and lots of it was unexpected. What a day. We began by driving to the Peaks of Otter recreation area on the Blue Ridge Parkways, where we were to climb Sharp Top Mountain. The drive was spectacular, with ups and downs and twists and turns right up and over the blue ridge. The hike up Sharp top was breezy and cool in the shade of the trees, but pretty much 1.5 miles up hill...a lot of it on rocky stairs. There were lots of breaks going up. At the summit we were greated by the old stone cottage, and all of the stairs and boulders that top this pointy mountain top. The views were literally 360 degrees...it was amazing. Jack was climbing on all ... read more

This trip has been a long time coming, and finally it is here. We first began discussing the possbiilty of an American roadtrip 2 or 3 years ago, and over that time brought it from rough idea to fruition...we are in Roanoke Virginia afterall. We got off to a later start then hoped, leaving home at 7:20am, crossing the border at 9:30 or so, and then promptly getting lost in Buffalo. We looped around, lost like fools through the various poorly signed highways and city streets of Buffalo. At one point we nearly got into an accident when a local driver jumped out into the road from behind some cars. I swerved, avoided the car, and a large traffic cone that was right in the way as well. In the end we found our way. And ... read more

September 2 Travelled to Amish country today via Gettysburg. Very moving experience there. What a total waste of life. Amish people live a very simple life. No modern conveniences at all, but very happy with their lives. We stayed at our worst hotel, a Holiday Inn in York, which had dreadful lighting in the dining area, and where I tripped up a very hard to see small step. Only damage to pride, thankfully. September 3 Drove to Washington and checked into a magnificent hotel, the Omni Shoreham. Bill Clinton had his inauguration ball there, and many famous people have performed there. In the evening we went out to a restaurant in Georgetown, very nice, followed by a night tour of some of the monuments around. We are arranging a bit of a gettogether for a few ... read more
