We left New York and headed south recently on the Broadbent Express. The trip took slightly longer than anticipated. Twenty hours after pulling out of Johnstown, New York we arrived in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The delays were the result of a variety of factors. The first being that each gas stop takes a half-hour. And when you’re getting six miles a gallon, they happen often. I offered my dad ten bucks gas money for the ride, but he declined.
The second delay was the result of my suggestion to check out a local pub for lunch only to find that navigating a 33-foot RV towing an SUV behind it is not conducive to small country roads. The RV can not go in reverse when towing, so the 1.3 miles I thought would be easy to get to turned into another hour delay. And we didn’t make it to the restaurant.
Oh yeah, and dinner at Chris’s Family Restaurant. Now this was one classy establishment. Upon entering your greeted with the one question you always want to hear at a family restaurant, smoking or non-smoking? And when it’s time to go, would you like a six-pack for the road?
Finally, the weather slowed us down some and tired my dad out, so we slept at a truck stop with another 500 or so truckers. There’s nothing like going to sleep amongst the hum of a couple hundred diesel generators idling and worrying that one of them is going to accidentally slam into your slider bed that extends six feet to the outside of the RV.
Seriously though, the ride was a lot of fun and a very comfortable way to travel. Elizabeth and I each had a leather recliner and Camille’s car seat was strapped to a leather couch. Thank you mom and dad for the ride! It was a memorable experience.
