I'm getting geared up for my trip to Peru. I can't believe I am traveling on Monday! I need to straighten up the house for the dog sitter and start packing. First thing before packing is writing the list, what to take with me without adding unnecessary weight. Why? Weight restrictions for flights are a big deal. I want to leave plenty of room for souvenirs on the way back. For myself, I always like to bring back an item of jewelry and one art piece but I also try to bring something home from my trips for family. While writing my list, I need to keep my itinerary in mind. Below is my travel plan... November 17: overnight travel. Sleeping in flight requires a very comfy outfit, including a large silk scarf, cozy socks, and ... read more

We're home, safe and sound, our grand adventure coming to an end. The house is still standing, the pets all still alive and the grass in dire need of a mowing. We're all conflicted about being here - not wanting the vacation of our lives (so far!) to come to an end, but all feeling the tugs of home calling. As Todd and I reflect on our last 28 days, we conclude the following: We did it. We lived with our kids in a confined space 24/7 for 28 days, and loved it. We were delighted by the impeachable weather we enjoyed - not having to modify plans once. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised by the number of rainbows we encountered in our travels (last count being 4 or 5). We accomplished Todd's ambitious itinerary, ... read more

Well, 10:15 pm but we managed to get just about everything in the minivan, thanks in part to a bigger car top carrier. Nothing like packing for a trip at night. Won't be much leg room for anyone but the driver, but what's three days of sitting criss-cross applesauce, right? We'll stretch our legs at night and again in the RV! In addition to camping chairs, 8 duffle bags, 5 walking sticks, 2 electronics bags, 4 sleeping bags, 6 pillows and other creature-comforts, we even managed to squeeze in Todd's guitar. Can't have a campfire without live music, right? May have to ship the souvenirs back, of course. A big shout out to Chloe & Faith for helping us get everything packed and loaded. Could not have done it without you guys. Will post pictures of ... read more

Well, t-minus 34 hours (roughly) and counting. Todd is in full vacation mode, having finished his last day of work today. Marcia is scrambling to get as much work done in the next 34 hours as humanly possible so as to not be bogged down with getting a start-up off the ground while on this monumental vacation! The kids are squeezing every last minute of video game and TV time as they can and asking how big the stuffed animals they want to bring can be. A sprint to the finish line, to be sure. Todd posted our route (see map picture) on a wall map for the kids to see. Over 7,000 miles in 28 days. Yikes. Two huge loops traversing almost coast to coast. Feeling excited and trepidatious all at the same time. But ... read more

April 11th. another beautiful day in Virginia, if you like 90 degree's and sunshine. stayed at my great Aunt and Uncles last night on my step dad's side. Bill made his famous mac and cheese, a family recipe. i learned all about history in the family about how his grandmother was a hotel owner and used this recipe to serve to guests. thank you Bill and Rosemay for the stay. a lovely home here in arlington. I like the old door handles, the bathroom knobs to the toilets and things like this. all metal. Arlington where they live looks a little bit like White Plains New York. of course bill showed me his records. he has an amazing set up which is is always willing to show. the amplifier is a tube set up hand-made from ... read more

It's been a week since Dad and I flew home, and unfortunately it's back to reality, which means the insanity of catching up on 3 weeks of missed work. Looking back though, it was completely worth it. Dad and I rode a lot of miles and saw a lot of great things, and overall we both had a fantastic time together. I know having spoken to Dad this week, he's been telling everyone he meets about the trip and Mom has mentioned that his face lights up every time he talks about it. For me it's been the same. I came home to a collage of photos on my office window that a friend of mine at work has been posting for everyone to see, and everyone has stopped by asking me about the trip. It's ... read more

With yet another day of severe jet lag and suffering from the time difference, I spent the day at Arlington National Cemetary. What an amazing experience! I was to touched, honored and inspired by this hallowed ground. Speechless from the stretches of white tombstones, I think every American should visit this place. I took the easy way out and opted to purchase a ticket for the tram. With very sore feet from the day before, I was grateful for the tram ride. The first stop was JFK's gravesite, on the bottom of the hillside below Arlington House and marked by the Eternal Flame that Jackie and RFK lit at Kennedy's funeral. It was a solemn, peaceful, and reflective place. So much lost. I immediately thought of my dad and all my years of him remembering the ... read more
