Bryce Canyon National Park
Published: September 25th 2011North America » United States » Utah » Bryce Canyon19th Sept ’11 Bryce Canyon. Well the most outstanding thing about this park is the rock formations! They are known as The Hoodoos and look just like people!! One is even called Queen Victoria and various presidents have been compared to some of the others! We did a 3 mile hike down from Sunrise Point at the top of the rim to the Queen’s Gardens which although it had steep drop offs I coped with them as they were mainly shielded by rocks, we made our way through rock archways and down to the canyon floor. The rocks were all beautiful reds, pinks and yellows. We then went along Navajo Loop which winds through the rock formations, with trees and shade. We saw birds and chipmunks here and then went back up the trail to Sunset ... read more
Zion National Park, Kolob Canyon and Cedar Breaks
Published: September 25th 2011North America » United States » Utah » Zion National Park17th Sept ’11 Cedar City, Utah This was our base for 3 nights allowing us 2 full days of exploring. We set off from Flagstaff that morning and drove to Cedar City via Zion National Park. This was a fabulous park, we both agreed it was our favourite. From the direction we came from we had to drive through a massive long tunnel right through the mountains to get into the park – an unusual sensation but pretty exciting as it was so long and there were occasional windows where you got tantalising glimpses of soaring mountain peaks. The mountains surrounding the canyon were all different shapes and colours, from red jagged peaks to white flat topped mountains with vegetation growing on them, all different heights and all equally impressive. What was particularly unique and special ... read more
Thunder, lightning, pouring rain and hail. By mile 10 everyone was drenched. It reminded me a lot of the LA Marathon I ran in March of this year. I would have put that one at the top of my "worst marathons ever" list had it not been for the group of friends I was running with. This marathon, however, I ran alone and with the miserable conditions and nobody to talk to, I'd have to say it wins "worst marathon" award. Only because of the weather, of course, because the scenery through Blacksmith Fork Canyon was/is spectacular. There were a couple of noteworthy moments during this marathon that you might find interesting to read about. The first was an older gentleman who lived in a nice home around the 15 mile marker in Blacksmith Fork Canyon. ... read more
Day 14 Bryce Canyon
Published: September 15th 2011North America » United States » Utah » Bryce CanyonWe heard rain all night and hoped it would be gone by the time we started our day..Not! Our friend Tony also had developed back problems so no Motorcycle trips today. Steve ended up riding ours 24 miles in the rain to rent a car for all of us to use. We all piled in after lunch and headed to Bryce Canyon. We ended up with some wonderful photos despite the low lying clouds and fog. It is hard to believe that one canyon could have such diverse landscape. God never ceases to amaze!! Despite the weather, we had a terrific day with our good friends from CA.... read more
Day 13 Torrey UT to Panguitch UT
Published: September 22nd 2011North America » United States » Utah » PanguitchSpent the night in Thousand Lakes campground, so far the most beautiful one we've been in. Highly recommend this one. We could stay only one night. Too bad because there is so much to see there. (Grand Staircase Escalante Park) Oh well, Next time. We traveled on RT 12 all day. This road is stated to be the 4th most beautiful Rt in the U.S. and they are right! however no one told us that it is not recommended for Motorhomes, or at least one as large as ours. Smooth going to Boulder where we stopped for lunch and to visit the Anasazi Historical Museum. It was small but very informative. Back on the road we started climbing, and climbing all the way to 9600 ft. (we started at 4000 ft.) The landscape started as pines ... read more
Moab and Arches National Park
Published: September 16th 2011North America » United States » Utah » MoabAfter successfully escaping Vegas I drove for about 8 hours to get to Moab. It was an amazing drive and I really enjoyed it. I took some amazing pictures as I was going along. The Hotel I stayed at was really nice. It is called the River Canyon Lodge. The room was very nice. The Bed was amazingly comfortable. I slept really well. I got up early and went to a Place called the Pancake Haus. Which makes fairly nice flapjacks. This are not pancakes no matter what these Americans say. I spent the next 4 hours in the Arches National Park. This is a spectacularly scenic park. Just look at the pics. I then did the drive to Vail. It was really nice getting back into the mountains. The Road basically run next to the ... read more
The Weather Gods Smile on Us
Published: September 19th 2011North America » United States » Utah » Natural Bridges National MonumentUtah inspires the artist in all of us. There was a heavy rain the day before was came through. It made the reds in the rock formations even more vibrant. On a day of 368 miles driving, we managed to see Lake Powell, Natural Bridges Natl Monument and Capital Reef National Park. Incredible! The first stop was Natural Bridges National Monument. The Bridges differ from arches because they are caused by the erosive action of moving water. Arches are caused by other erosive forces such as frost and seepage. There are three bridges in the Park with several great viewpoints. Off we go to Lake Powell. We stopped at the Bridge, and then later way above the Bridge for a better view. Lake Powell is the second largest man-made reservoir in the US. It was created ... read more
Moab, Utah(ADV edition) and Blue John Canyon
Published: September 29th 2011North America » United States » Utah » MoabWe would have liked to stay in FT. Collins longer but good off-road riding was calling and we had to answer. Our base camp was just north of Moab in a little recreation area parked a stones throw from the Colorado River. The trails were multi-use so you could hike, bike, 4x4, atv, and motorbike!!!! The pix will speak for themselves. We also decided to try to hike the same canyon that the movie 127 hours was based on, it was kinda creepy. We got about half way and had to stop due to lack of canyoneering experience and gear. It was cool none the less!!! video...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pou2yvVxP4... read more
What can I say? Absolutely fantastic! You are driving along another one of those roads that go on for ever and all of a sudden you glimpse these shapes in the distance and you just want to start singing western movie theme tunes! Again the sheer size and scale of the rock formations is hard to describe or get an accurate feel for in a photo, but they are amazing. We pulled up at the visitor centre and had a look at the drive it yourself road and could soon see why they advised you to only attempt it in a 4x4! Rough it was! Unfortunately the tours were very expensive - $75 each so we hummed and haaahhhed and ate our sarnies while hoping someone would sidle up to us and offer to take us ... read more
Day 12 - Monument Valley & scenic drive up Rt 95
Published: September 15th 2011North America » United States » Utah » Mexican HatAfter breaking camp at Devil's Canyon we drove the motorhome south to Gooseneck State Park. There we saw the Colorado river cutting its way through the canyon floor. We off loaded the motorcycle in this remote park and left for a 100 mile round trip into AZ to see Monument Valley, deep in the Navajo Nation. After returning to the motor home, (Maggie was frantic as we were gone for 4 hrs) we loaded up and drove north along scenic route 95. We entered the canyon floor of ancient rivers with side walls over 1,500 feet. The colors were spectacular and around every turn the landscape was more impressive than the last. We crossed lake Powell in the upper end of Glen Canyon National Park. We drove past a massive Capital Reef with 1,000 foot rock ... read more
