What a glorious place! Despite the fact that we arrived with the rain, this is one amazing place. We hiked to Queen's Garden in nearly pouring rain but still were impressed by the beauty! This park is filled with hoodoos, which are unique formations of the rock from years of water and wind. The Paoute indians refused to stay here because they thought the Hoodoos were bad people who had been frozen in stone. Sadly, due to clouds, no stars... The next morning the Schanz gang and Ryan took a horseback ride to the bottom of the canyon and back. Bud, Linda's horse, loved walking ON the edge of the trail and Jenae, Ryan's horse, loved to try to reach the plants that were over the edge to eat. Dave's horse, Jesse, should have been called ... read more

" YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN SNOW?" "NO WE ARE JUST SUN LOVING AUSTRALIANS " "TAKE PITY ON US" In conversation with the family we are staying with they find out that my husband has never seen snow. The family astounded, took us up to the mountains that very night. These people are constantly going hiking, walking and their son did 'bouldering' (which is climbing around big boulders/rocks with no ropes "spiderman" style ) in the mountains in summer and skiing in winter - it was simply amazing to them that we don't get the same privledge. Even though it is the middle of summer and one of the hottest on record in years - every day around 35 degrees C or more, there was still snow in the mountains. Last winter had an unusally large amount ... read more

The conversation as we are heading to arrivals at the Salt Lake City Airport goes like this... Me: "Did you send the family a photo of us?" Him: "No" Me: "hmmmm" Me: "Do you know what they look like?" Him: "No" Me: "hmmmm" Me:"How are the gonna find us? I hope they have a sign" Well we didn't have to worry about that one, coming down the escalators we see a lovely looking couple smiling at us. "You look just like your dad" They say to my husband. So after 30 years some people still have good memories..... Well you can't escape those genes unfortunately... (or in our case) fortunately - as we were easy to spot in the small crowd at the Airport. Maybe we just don't look American? Wonder if they said "Yeah... those ... read more

We were supposed to go to Arches National Park today but there were huge forest fires that came across the highway so we had to take a detour that led us through a completely different state, not just a few highways. The drivers decided that Canyonlands National Park was a good alternative. We stopped off at two different locations in the park to see the canyons. They were beautiful. It looked a lot like the Grand Canyon. We were able to do a hike to an area called "Island in the Sky" and check out Upheaval Dome, which is hypothesized to be created by a meteorite that struck 60 million years ago. After the park, we headed to Moab for some dinner. It was still hot as hell so we found some where with air conditioning ... read more

Well, Salt Lake City is the weirdest place I have ever been... Where are all the people, the town was deserted apart from the Mormons trying to haul us into there massive church. Which they did manage, I must admit I was really curious as to what the deal was with them. A couple of ladies took us around, one was from Brazil and the other from China, they both spoke to us like robots, there script was so well rehearsed it was so blatently obvious. They took us into the Church and showed us there massive statue of Jesus that started speaking to us in this American accent... Then they took us to this other room and showed us their living apostles and prophet! They were all white men either from the sates or from ... read more

Hey All Will try and pick up where I left off... Went to Chicago after living the 'Windy City' of Cleveland. When you arrive in Chicago you can't help but notice that the skyline is massive and you get the impression that it is bigger than New York but they tell me that Chicago is the 3rd largest city in the US so it clearly isn't bigger, just seems so. There is a nice beach tehre and very interesting architecture on the buildings. It's a city that would be easy to live in. Went for a look along the 'Magnificent Mile' shopping street but managed to resist buying anything. Went to the top of the John Hancock tower which is 100 sotries high and had a look at the viewing platform which gives an excellent view ... read more

St. George's weather is so much warmer than northern Utah around Salt Lake City, that they call it "Dixie". The Mormon's grew cotton here during the Civil War when they couldn't get cotton from the Southeast. Brigham Young had his winter home in St. George. Jim and I visited it and Jacob Hamblin's pioneer home. It was quite interesting to hear the history of the local Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saint's (LDS). We attended a performance of the Southwest Utah Symphony. It was a pops concert with 3 tenors. We have enjoyed some very good concerts and plays everywhere we have gone, which gives us a good idea of what is available. Pittsburgh's still at the top. I did decide to do "the hill" and I have done it many times. The ... read more

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined” . - Thoreau LINK Outdoor Outlet We had an early start on Friday and drove about 70-80 miles north to the northern end of Zion Park. It’s a little known and little used - it’s called Kolob Canyon, and we took the scenic drive up to the top and had our breakfast. We were the only ones there. Yes, there were mosquitoes; I couldn’t believe it. It was about 6,000 feet high. We tried to catch the sun coming up over the canyons, but it was the wrong angle, but still very beautiful. We did a hike on the Taylor Creek Stream and we had about 4 stream crossings. Wow, the water was cold, you could barely stand in it long enough ... read more
