We left Page heading for Zion National Park under sunny skies and cool temps. The drive from Page to Kanab along the Vermillion Cliffs and Escalante Staircase is beautiful. Utah never fails to impress us. The colors, shapes and contours are ever-changing. You can't get bored with the variety. At Kanab we decided to keep going and camp between Zion and Bryce Canyon. We found a nice little campground, Bauer Ranch, and decided to stay for 2 nights, doing Zion today and Bryce tomorrow. After setting up camp and putting dinner in the crock pot to cook while we were gone, [View Full Entry]

The drive over to Zion is mostly flat until the park entrance is reached. From there, it becomes mildly spectacular, then entirely engrossing and magnificent. Mother Nature is a crazy dame, as Cosmo Kramer says. But it is rather cold up in the park, and black ice is relatively frequent in the winter. If we had a 4WD, we would drive all the way through to the east entrance. Avoid this place in the summer, unless you take the tram provided by the rangers. Numerous casual hikes and mountain biking are available, weather permitting. It was a little too cold for [View Full Entry]

This is our second stay at this fabulous resort, the Inn at Entrada. Let me tell you a little about it, as this should be a must for your next trip to Vegas or surrounding environs. The Inn at Entrada is in the heart of Southern Utah's red rock country, with 40 private casitas in a private club atmosphere. There is a Johnny Miller designed golf course called Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club. Our casita has a big fireplace, leather lounge chair and ottoman, a Jacuzzi tub, and kitchenette, along with a garage with door opener. I personally enjoy the [View Full Entry]

With the bright lights firmly in the rear-view mirror, we left Vegas and made our way east on a road-trip that would take us through 4 of the United States south-western states. The first area we headed to was perhaps one of the greatest engineering accomplishments of the 20th century - the Hoover Dam. The dam keeps back the man-made Lake Mead. The road to Hoover Dam gets quite congested as the main highway actually runs over the dam itself. It marks the state line between Nevada and Arizona, straddling the Black Canyon. A new fly-over bridge is in the process [View Full Entry]

Nature's rock art takes another unique form in Zion national park. Zion seems to have an aura that is ethereal. If this park were in India, I bet it would have become a place of worship with the devout seeing God in every towering monolith in the park! It is the most visited park in Utah. High colorful towers of rock with vegetation on the floor. Fall was nearly at its peak during the time I visited the park. Yellow is the most visible fall color with some spots of red. The park has a shuttle system which ferries tourists from [View Full Entry]

We took a trip to southwestern Utah via Las Vegas last week. Our itinerary was to stay in St George Utah, and visit Zion National Park. We landed in Las Vegas Monday, and spent the night there. We drove about 2 hours north to St George Utah on Tuesday morning, arriving just after lunch time. This was Sheri's first visit to Utah, so we had lunch at Nielsen's Frozen Custard. So after a hearty sandwich, we had our first of many frozen custards. For those of you new to this, it is richer and creamier than frozen yogurt, and smoother than [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone - here's some pics from our last morning hiking in Zion - up with the dawn to hike to the Emerald pools & then off through the mile long tunnel to drive the 70 miles north to Bryce. On the way we passed the White Cliffs & Red Canyon Park. The Red Hoodoos there were a taste of the many we were to see in Bryce. Once there we decided to follow the park instructions and drive out to the furthest end of the park... what a view - all the way to Arizona! More shots from Bryce to [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, October 07, 2008 This was a day of mixed activities in the park. Kayla did laundry while Richard cycled into Springdale for some rock shopping. He picked up two more specimens for his collection. This afternoon, with our legs still feeling the after effects of yesterday’s hike, we decided to ride the park shuttle to the furthest point and hike a short trail into the canyon area known as the Narrows. Many people were intent on getting very wet by hiking further into the narrows than dry land would allow, and there is an adventure company here that will take [View Full Entry]

It is morning in Zion NP. We are preparing to drive to Bryce Canyon north of here.. I want to make a small confession and cleanse my soul. Robin didn't win any money. She actually did pick the five horse back in Vegas. We had never been to a casino and had no clue on placing a bet. SHE WOULD HAVE WON $2500.00. Now lets write about yesterday in Zion NP. Our second day exploring Zion NP found us taking on an unforgettable hike. The goal was Angel's landing - a sliver of rock 1500 feet above the canyon floor. Its [View Full Entry]
