Well the title is a little misleading since we did not really see any celebrities (does Montell Jirdan count?). Nikkie fell in love with (well I think she has always loved film festivals, but this just pushed it along) film festivals after going to the San Diego Film Festival last year - where her best friend Bekah works. So I figured I'd surprise her with a trip to Sundance. As always I blew the secret a couple days before we were suppose to leave (I have a habit of doing it). We flew out to Salt Lake late Thursday night and stayed there and drove into PARK CITY early Friday morning. This whole Film Festival thing was a bit confusing to us and we really had no clue as to how to get tickets. Just on a side note - it is totally worth it staying in Salt Lake City unless you have $400 a night to fork out for a mediocre hotel room in Park City and surroundings. The drive to Park City really is not that bad - unless it was storming snow like when we were there. Anyway - we got there around 7:30 and joined a line
Park City
Oh yeah - we have fun wherever we go of about 200 people. Bekah was there a couple days before so she got us tickets to one of the movies so I had some comfort in the fact that at least we were good for at least one movie. The box office does not open until 8:00 so you really just wait in line till 8:00, but then again there are people who got there at 6 in the morning. Tickets are hard to get but not impossible - unless you want to watch a specific show that's a fairly high demand. A word of advice. The town does not come to life until at least 2:00. We wandered around a almost "dead" town. We were pretty surprised by this. There was no one around. Streets were literally deserted and for a while we figured that Sundance must be on it's last legs since there really is no one around. As the day wore on we finally figured out the reason for this. The theatre's are all over the place. There was only one or two theatre's downtown. the rest of the theatre's were on the outskirts of Park City and there were also showings in Salt Lake and
Park City
Call me crazy but I love my flops Sundance. There really is no festivities in Park City except for at this one tent where they have live music (we'll get to this in a bit). It really was our first film festival and we really did not know what to expect. I guess in the end it all made sense.
Everything is really expensive and good luck with parking. The park and ride busses are probably your best option. We ended up getting tickets for 3 shows. One show we had to cancel because Nikkie's favorite band (The Guggenheim Grotto) were playing as part of the live music acts. This was actually fun. They have a big tent with small chairs to sit on. It is totally free, very intimate and totally worth it (we saw Montell Jordan, TGG, and a couple more upcoming artists). The next day we watched a short film in Salt Lake City ( that is after we drove all the way to Park City and upon our arrival realized that the show was in Salt Lake). It was my first "short" and it was totally awesome. Our friend Bekah worked in the short that won the best short award at Sundance (GO BEKAH). Anyway it is roughly 2- 10 minute movies about the most random crap. But it is totally fascinating. Try it. The one we watched had shorts on a storage facility, the world's biggest shopping mall that is almost completely deserted somewhere in China, a guy that amputates himself, and a short on Fredo from The Godfather (well really it was about John Cazale who played Fredo). On Saturday we wandered around Park City again and saw a midnight movie. It was hard to stay awake and even harder to get home, but we made it. We also made a drive high up into the mountains. It was beautiful. We love to just take the backroads and drive. The skiing looks incredible. We are not skiiers but we will start soon. The trip was fun. We had a good time, but not really what we expected. The theatres were far apart, it was cold and crappy, and the town does not come alive until late afternoon (but once it gets going it does not stop until the early hours of the morning so I guess that explains the zero activity until the afternoon). Unfortunately we did not really see any celebrities. It was still a good trip and experience.
Book wise we only crossed off 2 things - Park City was in 2 books. 36 down and 3,008 to go.
Til next time
