Well look who's in the White House!
Oh wait, I'm in the GHW Bush Library. You could get your picture taken behind the Presidential desk too, but that cost money, so I chose the freebie! (Camp Tejas)
We’ve been working hard on our projects, and yet it seems like we don’t get much done! (oh come on, you’ve had those weeks!) The first week we (women) finished painting the doors in one of the conference rooms, which is really a building! It’s the same one the men raised the roof on during our November project. Last week we moved to the woodshop to sand and prime boards that will be painted when they need them. We did this same thing in November, so you can check back to those pictures to see what it’s like now! I’m not sanding or priming, though, as I’m working to finish the signs that I began in November. I’d like to have them finished by the end of March when we leave. The two SOWER women are working with us also.
The men have the really interesting project (ours is necessary, not interesting!). They’re working on the house that is being built in the lake~~in November I showed you pictures of the draining of the lake so they could begin building, and they expected to be much further along by the time we returned in March, but with all
the rain, they got slowed down. The goal is to get the building enclosed, and then the men will be pulled away to work on a few tasks that need to be finished before the summer camps begin. They’ll be putting the roof on this week. The house is going to be beautiful, with a large wrap-around deck that sits over the lake; it will have four rooms in it, and as most rooms here can handle up to eight people, I’d suppose this facility will house around 30 people. That’s about all I know of the floor plans, but the rest of this camp is so exquisitely done that I have no doubt the Lake House will be the same.
Last Saturday I was outside when a young Chinese couple walked by, and then came back, pointed to the bus, and asked me if this was our car! I tried to explain that we do drive it, but it’s not a car! Their English was not good, so the explanations were tough, and I finally invited them in to look around; their names (English names) are Simon and Renee. Don’t even ask about their Chinese names! They’ve only
One more look at the Lake House.
The bridge is behind those leaning boards; I'll take more pictures as the work progresses. been in America a week and Simon will stay for a month, but Renee is going to stay for four months and practice English at Texas A&M. She took no less than 30 pictures of the inside of our bus! Before they left, Simon’s sister, her husband and their two kids were also in here; they were here for a retreat for the sister’s Houston church. It was interesting to talk with them, look at their pictures, and get their take on what they expect our country to be like. (Last time we were here, we had a French couple that came in and took pictures!)
There were 400 people here last weekend, and about half that many throughout the week (spring break in Texas!) so lots of people every where. The max they can house is 575, including staff, so the camp wasn’t full, but pleasantly active! The weekend group, was actually several different groups, and same with the groups throughout the week. There’s a wedding here this upcoming weekend, and then it’s fairly quiet next week. That being said, there’s lots of food at three meals each day, and the leftover food is boxed up at the
The Lake House
This is what the men are working on. The lake has more water in it than they planned on, but it has rained so much that they can't keep the water level down! end of the week, taken to a low income neighborhood, and passed out door to door. I helped box up the leftovers, with a meal in each box. It’s a good feeling to think of people getting food delivered right to their door, without even knowing it’s coming! And waaaay better than having the food go to waste. I guess they don’t have much food to give away in the summer, because it’s easier to plan for groups of teenagers~~they’ll eat anything, and lots of it!
Bob and I went to College Station, home of Texas A & M, to go through the George HW Bush Presidential Library. I don't have a lot of pictures from it, but it was fun to look at everything, and see the news from that era, and what's happened since. It was an enlightening afternoon.
