Am finally in the US of A. Am gonna be here for a time interlude am
not certain sure of. It is my foremost time in the United States and
you can figuratively make out the new man in me. I must articulate am
just bored rigid of the wintry cold and worse still, the colloquial speech
these black Americans are using.
I remember, for instance, I passed through Chicago, Illinois, which
happened to be my Port of Entry. I was about to go back home!
I wanted to tell the port authorities to get me another plane predestined
to Kenya, I go home!
It was damn cold and things were not working out for me.
To make things worser, I remember at one time, during my clearance,
one of the port officials asked a question that only God and fate
gave the answer! I just remember she said, "Do you have,............" the
rest were like jargon to me. I got nothing! I just used common sense
and knew she was asking for my documents. So, I got ALL the
documents off the envelope and gave them to her. She honorably did
the rest. Thank God she did not ask me any other question. She just sort
the documents out, may be even the ones she did not really want, and after
she was done with the clearance, gave me back my stuff and thisam sure I
heard: "welcome to the US and have a good stay." I went without even
thanking her. i did not know it is a culture to do that here in the USA. It is
part of courtesy to do that. But you know when you are brought up in an
environment where you believe that being served in the public offices and
facilities is your right, though it is, you forget to do even the most basic and
essential things. Like saying, "Thanks" or "Welcome"
May be she knew who I was, where I was from and what I was made of. Otherwise,
I could have seen a long day!
That is America boy! You have always said it is wonderful.! One thing I have liked them
about is
the great courtesy they treat people with, Especially when they know you are
new here abd need help.
I wish it could spread throughout the world.
