Today proved to be more productive than day one. Jon and Joyce were able to get their rig fixed so we hit the road around 12:30. Crazy winds followed us all the way from Del Rio to Marathon. We stopped for the night in Marathon at a nice Passport America camp. Wind chill upon arrival was 43. Temps are supposed to go down to 34 tonight. We weren't quite ready for cold temps yet..... HA!!!... read more

Geo: 30.3586, -103.665 Marathon Alpine TerlinguaGot up the next morning and decided to eat at Johnny B's right next to the Gage. Good old food that is not really good for you but good tasting while it is hot. Stuffed ourselves and then we set off. We went to the French Grocer to check out what they had to offer and bought a few things but the produce section was not very full and this was what we needed the most of so decided to head to Alpine to see what we could find there.Enjoyed the ride and looking at the changing scenery as it flew past. The sun was shining and it was beautiful and got there and got to the store. Did your shopping and of course find many more things to buy than ... read more

Day 35 05/05/2012 We left Floresville Texas after breakfast, and headed toward Bandera, an 80 mile or so ride that would take us through San Antonio. Now this city is fairly large and we certainly do not want to get tangled up getting through it, with that said the satnav would guide us no problem which it did, but I must say that whoever designed the road system there must have been barking mad, I have never seen so many flyovers, underpasses, loops, curls, banks, and bridges in my life. Had it not been for the satnav we would still be there. Bandera was a small town that had been recommended to us by the kind folks in Galveston, they said it was the Cowboy capital of the world, and a haven for bikes and horses ... read more

Today was a very busy last day in Alpine. We got up and had a bite to eat and then headed over to the Alpine Golf Club to play a 9 hole round before it got too hot. Well, it was already hot when we got there! And, the humidity was high due to the rain that had fallen the previous 2 days. It was fun even though I got a sunburn....I thought it was too early to get burned! Luckily, it isn't too bad. After the golf round we had a drink on the patio and then headed about 45 miles from Alpine into the Davis Mountains to visit the McDonald Observatory. This is a very cool place where students and scientists come to view the heavens. They have a number of giant telescopes but ... read more

Today was a very relaxing and fun day in Alpine. I need to tell you the saga of our hotel room. Last Thursday, we were called by my father to tell us that the hotel we had reservations at was sold and would be closing on Monday (we arrived Sunday night). So we called my brother and asked him to find us another place to stay. Now, I had made our reservations back in January and I knew then that the town's hotels were filling up fast. Alpine is one of three gateways in this area to get down to the Big Bend National Park and there are not many hotels down that way so when people come from afar to visit the national park they stay at Alpine, Marathon or Marfa. So, I was a ... read more
